Tijdens de laatste decennia heeft de stad Buenos Aires diepgaande transformaties ondergaan, die o... more Tijdens de laatste decennia heeft de stad Buenos Aires diepgaande transformaties ondergaan, die ook in de Argentijnse romanliteratuur gestalte hebben gekregen. Onder de militaire dictatuur (1976-1983) werd een grootschalige liberalisering en privatisering van de economie ingezet en werd het sociale en politiek weefsel vernietigd. Deze ontwikkelingen kenden een hoogtepunt in de jaren 90, toen Argentinie zich inschreef in de globalisering, en leidden uiteindelijk tot een systeemcrisis in december 2001. Al die processen hebben een weerslag gehad op de publieke ruimte en de sociale geografie. Er hebben zich verschijnselen voorgedaan als fragmentatie, ghettovorming en segregatie, verpaupering van de middenklasse en criminalisering van armoede. De sociale ontwrichting komt tot uiting in de opkomst van gated communities, shopping malls en country clubs enerzijds en de uitbreiding en herdefiniering van de villas of sloppenwijken anderzijds. Ook hebben nieuwe actoren hun intrede gedaan in het straatbeeld (cirujas, cartoneros, piqueteros etc.) en zijn er nieuwe migratiestromen op gang gekomen. Aan de hand van een analyse van twee romans, La villa van Cesar Aira (2001) en Puerto Apache van Juan Martini (2002), zal worden aangetoond hoe schrijvers vandaag de dag naar structurele armoede kijken en aan de hand van welke narratieve en stilistische procedes ze die in kaart brengen. Esthetisering en artistieke fascinatie (Aira) of rauwe beschrijving van de overlevingsstrategieen en subculturen van de villeros (Martini) voeren de boventoon. Er zal verwezen worden naar recente inzichten over de evolutie van Buenos Aires en de verbeelding ervan in haar literatuur van onder meer Adrian Gorelik, Gisela Heffes en Beatriz Sarlo

Meertaligheid als literaire mythe Ilse Logie In zowel de hedendaagse vertaalwetenschap als de ver... more Meertaligheid als literaire mythe Ilse Logie In zowel de hedendaagse vertaalwetenschap als de vergelijkende literatuurwetenschap wordt meertaligheid beschouwd als de nieuwe heilige graal – het toppunt van symbolisch literair kapitaal. De vraag is echter wat meertaligheid precies betekent, en of we hier niet met een grotendeels retorische constructie te maken hebben waarvan de complexiteit onvoldoende wordt ingezien. Wetenschappers als Yasemin Yildiz, Brian Lennon of David Gramling hebben, op verschillende gronden en met uiteenlopende argumenten, kanttekeningen geplaatst bij het primaat (Yildiz, Lennon) en zelfs de wenselijkheid van meertaligheid als exponent van de literaire norm in een geglobaliseerde maatschappij. Volgens Lennon is het hele literaire bedrijf net gericht op het ondermijnen van wat hij “strong multilingualism” noemt, en worden alleen oppervlakkige verschijningsvormen van meertaligheid, zoals code switching, daadwerkelijk getolereerd.
