ABSTRACT: This article concerns itself with the so-called "Golden Age" in the history of the bourgeois theatre in Iquique which coincides with the major boom of the nitrate industry between the late nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century. From the analysis of historical data, it is possible to argue that it was during that period in which the performing art had the biggest results and artistic and social impacts on the local community. This is expressed in the importance and the quality of the imported shows by the bourgeoisie from Europe, together with the emergence and proliferation of the social-working theatre KEY WORDS: BOURGEOIS THEATRE-SALTPETRE INDUSTRY-TEATRO MUNICIPAL-TEATRO IQUIQUEÑO 1 Este artículo está basado en un estudio de investigación del mismo autor, denominado Historia social del teatro en Iquique y la pampa, 1900-2015. 2 Antropólogo Social, Pedagogo, Magíster en Educación Superior, Académico de la Universidad Arturo Prat.

ABSTRACT This article is a testimony of the of gestation and development process of one of the deadliest guerrilla movements of Latin America that emerged last century in the mythical Peruvian city of Huamanga. Its name, Shining Path, a terrorist group that had a profound impact in Perú, to the point that many Peruvians believe that the country exists before and after this movement. It is one of the many dramatic experiences that have taken place in our society in relation to the systematic violation of human rights, denounced by international agencies responsible for the enforcement of the law and protection of people; they not only denounce acts of undemocratic regimes but also the activities of totalitarian groups that use violence to reach their political goals. For the author, the analysis of these traumatic facts can be useful as an efficient catalyst to answer two basic questions at educational level: What is the relevance

Maria del Salitre, a play written by Sergio Arrau in 1989. In the play,
death is shown as a stigma and a condemnation that nitrate workers
endure under the exploitation regime that marks the nitrate industry in
the Chilean northern desert at the beginning of the 20th century. From a
socio-historical perspective, we shall try to answer the following questions:
Which are the symbolic and real representations of death in the nitrate
world? What is the meaning of dying among the nitrate workers? What
is the historical vision of death within the massacre? What is the dramatic
meaning of the workers’ death in the play?

[Coruña, the wrath of the winds]. This play is based upon the events of June 5th, 1925, which
culminated in a massacre of workers in the nitrate office of La Coruña, located in the Region of
Tarapacá, Chile. Through an analysis of the writing strategies and an examination of the origins
of the Chilean Workers’ Theatre movement, we intend to show how the play is linked to our
country’s early twentieth-century working-class theatre. In addition, my intention is to illustrate
how the examination of our country’s tragic events may contribute to the development of a
national political theatre as they are linked to the memories and identities of Tarapacá and Chile.
