My book concerns the interplay of sea and land from Classical poetry to philosophy. How do sea and land relate to one another in political literature? What roles do they play in the theorization of politics? Terra e mare: metafore e politica in conflitto shows how sea and land from Homer to Carl Schmitt, Horace to Benjamin are dealt with and have become part of political discourse.

Abstract Ippolito Nievo’s character Pisana from Le Confessioni d’un Italiano has stirred controversial comments since its appearance in the mid-nineteenth century. This article claims that Pisana’s peculiar temperament is the result of an unusual but successful, blending of the narrative forms of Bildungsroman and historical novel. The scandalous enigma that the character of Pisana embodies in the eyes of her lifelong, obsessed lover, Carlo Altoviti, may be revealed if the reader deciphers her persona through the lenses of the literary genres employed by the author. Not Carlo’s confessions, then, but Nievo’s political unconscious sheds light on the wild life of the young aristocrat Pisana, whose unruly, uninhibited attitude warrants her a prominent place in modern Italian literature.

In their Preface to the Italian translation of Henry Jenkins’s Convergence Culture in 2006, WuMing One and WuMing Two announced that “in the best of all worlds” the book would have caused a major debate, in Italy, on the Internet and the new technologies of communication (“Prefazione” 2007). While Wu Ming’s prediction did not come true, evidence that transmedia storytelling and media convergence are fundamentally shaping Italian culture in the age of digital media warrants our scholarly attention. In this context, this special issue “Convergence Culture and Transmedia Storytelling in Contemporary Italy” engages with contemporary theory and criticism to explore how various narrative forms and forms of entertainment are conceptualized, produced, and received across multiple media platforms, in Italy, in an age of transnational media flows, networks, and markets.
