ABSTRACT
Karl Marx may have been wrong about communism but he was right about much of capitalism. Faced with ugly economic exploitations of the proletariat (employee) by the bourgeoisie (employer) in his time, Marx went on to examine the effects of capitalism on labour, productivity and  economic development and in the end, argues for workers revolution to overturn capitalism in favour of communism. In our contemporary capitalistic dominated world, Marx critique of capitalism appears even more relevant amidst never-ending unemployment crises, workers welfare, minimum wage and global inequality. This calls for a look back on Marx critique of capitalism.

The sophists were the itinerant professional teachers and intellectuals who frequented Anthens and other Greek Cities in the second half of the fifth century B.C.E. In return for the a fee, the sophists offered young wealthy Greek men on education in arête (Virtue or Excellence), thereby attaining wealth and fame while also arousing significant antipahhty. Prior to fifth century B.C.E., arête was predominantly associated with the aristocratic warrior virtue such as courage and physical strength. In the democratic Anthen of the fifth century B.C.E however, arête was increasingly understood in term of ability to influence the fellow citizens in political gathering through rhetorical persuasion.

Dating from the earliest recorded history, man has always sought and developed system of organizing himself according to what is befitting to his true nature as a rational being. He remains always a political animal and can only utilize himself fully in a well organized political state. How well organized or how he could organize his political society is the problem of political philosophy. But that the establishment of a ‘perfect’ or ideal political society has always eluded him is not as thought provoking as the fact that in his nature there is this yarning towards the perfect or ideal state. Political philosophy as we know is rational enquiry into all that concerns man and his life in relationship with his fellow men in the state. It is the rational study and evaluation of the elements of the state. So many, political philosophers adopted different theories and system to ensure that man lives happily in the state.
However, the main concern of this eBook is to evaluate critically the political thought of John Locke. Locke is one of the most outstanding social contract theorists in the history of political thought. He belongs to the leading fathers of British empiricism. As a modem Epoch thinker, Locke postulated in his political theory that freedom and equality should be the watch-word in any political governance because for him, it ensures the common good of everybody in the state. Unlike Thomas Hobbes, Locke believes that human nature is characterized by reason and tolerance. Then unlike Hobbes, Locke believes that human nature allowed man to be selfish.
Like Hobbes also, Locke assumed that the sole right to defend in the state of nature was not enough, so people established a civil society to resolve conflicts in a civil way with help from government in a state. No wonder Locke’s emphasis is more on the civil society and social contract
