The manuscript aims were to determine awareness of HIVST among Gambian men, and whether prior awareness of HIVST is associated with recent HIV testing uptake. Methods We used men’s cross-sectional data from the 2019–2020 Gambian Demographic and Health Survey. We employed design-adjusted multivariable logistic regression to examine the effects of HIVST knowledge on recent HIV testing. Propensity-score weighting was conducted as sensitivity analyses. Results Of 3,308 Gambian men included in the study, 11% (372) were aware of HIVST and 16% (450) received HIV testing in the last 12 months. In the design-adjusted multivariable analysis, men who were aware of HIVST had 1.76 times (95% confidence interval: 1.26–2.45) the odds of having an HIV...

This prospective, multi-center active surveillance cohort study examined the short-term safety of COVID-19 vaccines in adults with a prior history of SARS-CoV-2. Methods Canadian adults vaccinated between December 22, 2020 and November 27, 2021 were sent an electronic questionnaire 7 days post dose 1, dose 2 and dose 3 vaccination. The main outcome was health events occurring in the first 7 days after each vaccination that prevented daily activities, resulted in work absenteeism or required a medical consultation, including hospitalization. Results Among 684,998 vaccinated individuals, 2.6% (18,127/684,998) reported a prior history of SARS-CoV-2 infection a median of 4 months (interquartile range 2-6 months) previously. After dose 1, individuals with moderate (bedridden) to severe (hospitalized) COVID-19 who received BNT162b2, mRNA1273 or ChAd...

Currently, there are limited epidemiological data characterizing STIs in the general population in Rwanda. We assessed the national and regional epidemiology of STIs in Rwanda from 2014–2020 among patients syndromically screened for STIs in all health facilities in Rwanda. Methods This is a retrospective analysis of the trend of STIs epidemiology among screened patients at all health facilities in Rwanda using data from the Health Management Information System (HMIS) reporting. Adult patients (15 years and over) screened for STIs between July 2014 and June 2020 were included in the analysis. Outcomes of interest were the number of individuals screened for STIs and individuals diagnosed with at least one STI with a syndromic approach only or plus a test together. Results Overall, the number of individuals screened for STIs over the study period was 5.3 million (M) in 2014–2015, 6.6 M in 2015–2016, 6...

This study aimed to determine significant health events amongst pregnant females after COVID-19 vaccination, compared with unvaccinated pregnant controls and vaccinated non-pregnant individuals.MethodsStudy participants were pregnant and non-pregnant females aged 15-49 years who had received any COVID-19 vaccine, and pregnant unvaccinated controls. Participants reported significant health events occurring within seven days of vaccination. We employed multivariable logistic regression to examine significant health events associated with mRNA vaccines.FindingsOverall 226/5,597(4.0%) vaccinated pregnant females reported a significant health event after dose one of an mRNA vaccine, and 227/3,108(7.3%) after dose two, compared with 11/339(3.2%) pregnant unvaccinated females. Pregnant vaccinated females had an increased odds of a significant health event...

While prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) is high, transmission among young MSM (15–24-years-old) remains poorly understood. We conducted a respondent driven sampling survey of 211 young MSM in urban Bandung, Indonesia in 2018–2019 to estimate HIV prevalence and associated risk factors. Thirty percent of young MSM were HIV antibody positive. This is nearly 100-fold greater than Indonesia’s population prevalence and sevenfold higher than average estimates for young MSM across Asia and the Pacific Region. Individual risk factors associated with HIV infection were being 20–24 years old, having a steady partner and preferring the receptive position during sex. Issues of stigma, discrimination and social exclusion were common. Few young MSM who were open with friends and family members about their sexual identity. Among those that were, close to half reported experiencing feelings of aversion from these groups. ...
