The circadian rhythm, as part of a broad time structure (chronome) of lipid peroxides and antioxidant defense mechanisms may relate to prevention, efficacy and management of preventive and curative chronotherapy. Fifty newly diagnosed patients with peptic ulcers, 30-45years of age, and 60 age-matched clinically healthy volunteers were synchronized for one week with diurnal activity from about 06:00 to about 22:00 and nocturnal rest. Breakfast was served around 08:30, lunch around 13:30 and dinner around 20:30. Drugs known to affect the free-radical systems were not taken. Blood samples were collected at 6-hour intervals for 24h under standardized, presumably 24-hour synchronized conditions. Plasma lipid peroxides, in the form of malondialdehyde (MDA), blood superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxide (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT) activities, and serum total protein, albumin, ascorbic acid, total serum cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol concentrations were dete...

Alleles A1 and A2 of the Bos taurus CSN2 gene are the most common in a number of dairy cattle breeds. A genetic variant of the bovine β-casein gene includes A1 and B which encodes a histidine residue at codon 67, resulting in potential liberation of a bioactive peptide, β-casomorphin, upon digestion. This is an opium family substance, and has been associated with a large number of clinical implications in humans. Study includes amplification of bovine β-casein gene and further differentiation of variants A1 and A2 beta casein in cows. Conventional PCR was done to amplify β-casein gene in three hundred and one specimens. Further eighty amplicons were sent for sequencing. From the sequenced data, 24 were A2 homozygous (A2A2), 11were A1 homozygous (A1A1) and 37 heterozygous (A1A2). Allele discrimination in cows will be significant for the farmers, breeding programmes as well as for dairy industries as the milk variant determination will predict the outcome of the beta casein variants w...

In this work, an attempt was made to synthesize a novel Chitosan-Mesoporous silica (CS-MS) hybrid composite to design a drug delivery system based on ultrasound triggered stimuli-responsive smart release. The in-vitro drug release properties of both the Mesoporous Silica (MS) and Chitosan (CS) hybrids were investigated. Ibuprofen (Ibu) was used as a model drug. The results from powder X-Ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, and BET N2 adsorption isotherms exhibited that MS can accommodate drug molecules into the lumen of the channels and pores. Drug release, stimulated by temperature and pH of the release media was also investigated. We studied the Ultrasound (US) triggered release of Ibu in a simulated body fluid (pH 7.4). The results exhibited that US can be used as a non-invasive technique for drug release from polymeric materials. The enhancing effect of ultrasound on drug release is due to the Cavitation effect, without causing any significant destruction on the polymer morphology.

The hypolipidemic activity of Cassia tora (Chakvat, Chakunda) (Family: Caesalpiniaceae) seeds extract have been studied in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. In this model oral administration of seed extract (500 mg/kg bw.P.o.) for 15 days in diabetic-dyslipidemic rats exerted significant lipid lowering effect as assessed by the reversal of serum levels of total cholesterol, phospholipids, triglyceride, free fatty acids, protein and lipid peroxide. The decrease of lipids and apoprotein levels of Very Low Density Lipoprotein and Low Density Lipoprotein were followed by stimulation of plasma post-heparin lipolytic activity as well as lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase, hepatic superoxide dismutase, catalase, triglyceride lipase and lipoprotein lipase activities with increase in reduced glutathione. Lipid and apoprotein level of High Density Lipoprotein were also recovered partially on treatment with seeds extract. The results of the present study demonstrated antidyslipidemic and antiox...

A Guest–Host system based on meta-Nitroaniline (m-NA) and recycled polystyrene (RPS) susceptible to generate nonlinear optically (NLO) active property such as second harmonic generation (SHG) has been prepared. Pure, sublimed, optical grade, crystalline m-NA is used as a guest and RPS from the disposable packaging waste as available utilized as the host polymer. In this paper we report the effect of NLO active m-NA on the bulk and optical properties of RPS. The purified m-NA was incorporated from 1–10 wt% in the RPS polymer matrix by conventional solution casting method. Thin, transparent, freestanding films obtained were characterized with optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), viscosity measurement, and UV–Visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy for bulk properties evaluation and Nd:YAG laser studies for optoelectronics application such as SHG through frequency doubling. According to one view of linguistic information (Karttunen, 1974; Stalnaker, 1974), a speaker can convey contextually new information in one of two ways: (a) by asserting the content as new information; or (b) by presupposing the content as given information which would then have to be accommodated. This distinction predicts that it is conversationally more appropriate to assert implausible information rather than presuppose it (e.g., von Fintel, 2008; Heim, 1992; Stalnaker, 2002). A second view rejects the assumption that presuppositions are accommodated; instead, presuppositions are assimilated into asserted content and both are correspondingly open to challenge (e.g., Gazdar, 1979; van der Sandt, 1992). Under this view, we should not expect to find a difference in conversational appropriateness between asserting implausible information and presupposing it. To distinguish between these two views of linguistic information, we performed two self-paced reading experiments with an on-...

Camelpox is considered as emerging public health problem during this decade due to increased reported cases and outbreaks in camels. Camelpox is a contagious, often sporadic, and notifiable skin disease of camelids and is socio-economically significant as it incurs considerable loss in terms of morbidity, mortality, loss of weight and reduction in milk yield and confined to camel-rearing countries. The causative agent, camelpox virus (CMLV) is genetically closely related to variola virus and has gained much attention from researchers due to its recent emergence in human. The virus carrying genes responsible for host immune evasion mechanisms owing to the threat posed by potential bio-warfare agents. Although the disease can be diagnosed based on clinical features, the similar confounding skin lesions necessitate identification, detection and differentiation of the CMLV by molecular techniques. Vaccines are available in some countries and the available live attenuated vaccine provide...

This study shows the thermo-stability of lyophilized and purified recombinant VP7 bluetongue virus (BTV) protein in the presence of two sugar stabilizers (trehalose and mannitol) at different temperature. Truncated VP7 protein purified by nickel affinity column was lyophilized in the presence of trehalose and mannitol at 60 mM final concentration and then exposed to different temperature like 4, 25, 37 and 45 °C for various periods like 5 months, 7 weeks, 7 days and 48 h, respectively. After thermal treatment, the reactivity of the protein was evaluated in indirect ELISA. At 4 and 25 °C, the protein was stable up to 5 months and 7 weeks, respectively, irrespective of stabilizers used. At 37 °C, it was stable up to 3 days with both the stabilizers, after which it lost its stability and reactivity. At 45 °C, the protein was stable up to 30 and 24 h with trehalose and mannitol stabilizers, respectively. Both stabilizers found suitable for stability of the protein. However, trehalose ap...

Cu–Zn ferrite ( Cu 0.6 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4) thin films were deposited using rf-magnetron sputtering on glass substrates at room temperature in pure Ar gas environment. The influence of variation in Ar gas pressure between 5 and 15 mT on the crystal structure and magnetization has been studied. The XRD patterns show single phase nanocrystalline spinel structure with cubic symmetry. The AFM images also confirm the nanocrystalline nature of the films. The magnetization increases with increase in Ar gas pressure. The change in the crystal structure and magnetization has been explained in view of freezing of some Cu-ions on tetrahedral A-sites and equivalent number of Fe ions on octahedral B-sites during the deposition process due to high deposition rate in pure Ar environment. Furthermore, the deposition in reducing (argon) atmosphere may lead to the formation of Cu + ions that prefer occupation of the smaller four-coordinated A-site in the spinel structure and displace Fe 3+ cations to occ...

Tubular grafts were fabricated from blends of polycaprolactone (PCL) and poly(glycolide -co-caprolactone) (PGC) polymers and coated with an extracellular matrix containing collagens, laminin, and proteoglycans, but not growth factors (HuBiogel™). Multifunctional scaffolds from polymer blends and membrane proteins provide the necessary biomechanics and biological functions for tissue regeneration. Two crosslinking agents, a natural crosslinker namely genipin (Gp) and a carbodiimide reagent namely 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC), were used for further stabilizing the protein matrix and the effect of crosslinking was evaluated for structural, morphological, mechanical properties using SEM, DSC and DMA. SEM images and fiber diameter distribution showed fiber-size between 0.2 µm to 1 µm with the majority of fiber diameters being under 500 nm, indicating upper range of protein fiber-sizes (for example, collagen fibers in extracellular matrix are in 50 to 500 nm diameter range). HB coating did not affect the mechanical properties, but increased its hydrophilicity of the graft. Overall data showed that PCL/PGC blends with 3:1 mass ratio exhibited mechanical properties comparable to those of human native arteries (tensile strength of 1-2 MPa and Young's modulus of <10 MPa). Additionally, the effect of crosslinking on coating stability was investigated to assure the retention of proteins on scaffold for effective cell-matrix interactions.
An efficient and novel synthesis of (R)-rugulactone has been achieved employing Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation of allyl alcohols followed by selective hydride reduction of epoxy alcohols and olefin cross metathesis reactions.

ABSTRACT Molecular diagnostic tools for tuberculosis (TB) have evolved quickly with new innovations which can provide unprecedented opportunities for the rapid, sensitive and specific diagnosis of M. tuberculosis in clinical specimens and the status of its drug sensitivity. Microscopy and culture methods can not be replaced but the molecular assays can be applied in parallel with any new molecular tests for the diagnosis of TB. For extra pulmonary specimens, the use of the amplification methods is advocated, since rapid and accurate laboratory diagnosis is critical. Customization of the diagnostic usefulness of a molecular assay, according to the ease, reliability and need for health care sector is of immense value in a modern clinical mycobacteriology laboratory.

All major mining activity particularly opencast mining contributes to the problem of suspended particulate matter (SPM) directly or indirectly. Therefore, assessment and prediction are required to prevent and minimize the deterioration of SPM due to various opencast mining operations. Determination of emission rate of SPM for these activities and validation of air quality models are the first and foremost concern. In view of the above, the study was taken up for determination of emission rate for SPM to calculate emission rate of various opencast mining activities and validation of commonly used two air quality models for Indian mining conditions. To achieve the objectives, eight coal and three iron ore mining sites were selected to generate site specific emission data by considering type of mining, method of working, geographical location, accessibility and above all resource availability. The study covers various mining activities and locations including drilling, overburden loadi...

Six hundred healthy inborn newborns and infants upto the age of 18 months were studied. Cranial sonography was performed by real time 2D scanner with 5 MHz transducer and images were obtained through anterior fontanelle and temporo-squamal suture. Various parameters related to ventricular system were measured for different ages till the fontanelle remained open. These values will prove useful for diagnosing hydrocephalus at an early stage of the disease and also to find out the blocks at various levels in ventricular system.

ABSTRACT The two principal commercial polyamides are poly(hexamethylene adipamide) (nylon 66) and polycaprolactam (nylon 6). They are produced by direct amidation of a diacid with a diamine and ring-opening polymerization of ɛ-caprolactam, respectively. Poly(hexamethylene adipamide) is synthesized by hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid [1]. A stoichiometric balance of amine carboxylic group is readily obtained by the preliminary formation of a 1:1 ammonium salt:

The inhibitory activity (IA) of calcium oxalate crystallization was investigated in healthy Indians and renal stone formers. A marked circadian rhythm was observed in men and women of both groups. The rhythm pattern was similar on the basis of sex; however, it was different in stone formers as compared to normals. The acrophase for crystallization of calcium oxalate was observed, respectively, at 05.43 and 05.52 h in healthy men and women, and at 09.52 and 09.23 h in male and female renal stone formers. Moreover, the acrophase of percent inhibition by IA was observed at 17.44 and 17.52 h in healthy participants and at 21.52 and 21.27 h in male and female stone formers, respectively. Therefore, the acrophase suggests a highest risk of crystallization during the morning hours and a minimum one during the evening hours. The day-night rhythmic pattern of urinary calcium, magnesium and phosphorus is discussed in relation to the rhythm of IA.

ABSTRACT Enzymatic degradation of nanohybrid based on intercalation of chitosan (CS) within the galleries of montmorillonite (MMT) clay and grafted with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was studied using esterase enzyme in phosphate buffered solution. Chitosan was first intercalated between the galleries of natural unmodified sodium MMT clay and subsequently grafted with PLA to prepare nanohybrids of CS-g-PLA/MMT. The prepared membranes were characterised by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and NMR spectroscopy. The specimens were then subjected to enzymatic degradation to understand the effect of copolymerisation with PLA and the effect of incorporation of MMT in the CS matrix. The presence of MMT clay provided stability towards degradation of polymer matrix because of nanoscale dispersibility, thereby acting as a barrier towards the permeation of water molecules to induce hydrolysis of PLA. Similarly, the grafting of CS with crystalline PLA stabilised the CS matrix towards degradation, rendering it suitable for tissue engineering applications.
