Steel Melting Shop-I, Rourkela Steel Plant, Rourkela, produces 0.5 MT of various special steels through BOF-VAR/VOR-LF-CC route. One of the most serious problems in BOF operations was lance skulling, hood jamming, and build-up of metal in the mouth and cone of the furnace due to spitting and slopping. As spitting occurring during blowing increases, these particles of metal are deposited inside the mouth and cone and affect badly BOF productivity. In the present work, control of spitting has been established by addition of sinter during the period of spitting. It also helped to improve the slag formation and fluidity of slag through increase of FeO content during peak decarburisation period.

Production of special quality steels with lesser impurities and better cleanliness control for attaining a narrow chemical composition is one of the thrust area of the steelmakers. In recent times, Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has undergone major up gradation and modernization with the aim of capacity enhancement and production of special quality steels. To produce special quality steels, desulphurization of steel in ladle is going to play a very important role. To get higher degree of desulphurization of steel in ladle treatment, it is important to study the impact of different process parameters on desulphurization to design optimum slag chemistry. Thermodynamic database software can be applied as a tool for understanding the impact of process parameters on desulphurization by calculating slag metal interaction and characterization of ladle slag. In this work, thermodynamic database software FactSage 6.4 was applied for characterization of ladle top slags of different steel pla...

Diversion due to coil break in cold rolled non oriented (CRNO) grades of coils showed an increasing trend during Jan–May’12 at Silicon Steel Mill (SSM), Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). Coil break increased from a level of less than 1% during to a level of 30% in May’12. Samples from hot rolled coils and finished coils were taken and detailed metallurgical investigation was carried out to ascertain the genesis of such defects. Further studies were carried out in the processing lines and material flow was tracked from steel making to final product. The probable reasons were identified and corrective measures were taken leading to reduction in diversion due to coil break less than 2%.

Nano composites with magnesia refer to a broad range of composite materials with magnesia acting as the matrix and carbon nano material acting as the filler. The effect of the resins like epoxy and phenol formaldehyde in the formation of the CNTs in the nano composite was studied. The reinforcement of carbon nano particle in the MgO matrix along with the resins in the reduced atmosphere at high sintering temperature at11000C, 13000C and 15000C for 3hrs were observed. Characterization was done by using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM and FESEM. MgO with epoxy resin and carbon nano particle exhibited proper distribution of carbon on magnesia which was fully coated with carbon. The MgO with nano carbon and phenyl formaldehyde fired upto 1300oC also showed proper distribution of carbon on magnesia grain with some graphitization of carbon which was confirm by X-ray diffraction. The diffraction pattern and spectra from the Raman spectrophotometer of the magnesia composition with phenyl forma...

To keep pace with the rapidly changing needs and technological requirements of the steel construction industries, many efforts have been directed toward development of special grades of steels with higher strength levels and superior product attributes. New technologies such as continuous casting and thermomechanical controlled processing (TMCP) introduced at the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), have resulted in the successful development and commercialization of several new grades of steel. This article discusses some of the recent developments: SAILMA-450 HI plates for the fabrication of excavators, impellers, and bridges; ASTM-A537 Cl.1 pressure vessel steel for oil tankers and containers; and API X65 line pipes for oil and natural gas transmission.

In this investigation we studied the effects not only of tempering, but also of cold rolling before tempering, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a plain C-Mn steel initially having a ferrite-martensite structure. The tempering temperatures used varied from 600 to 700 o C. Two distinct types of structures, namely the normal tempered microstructure and the dual-phase microstructure, were observed. The associated mechanical properties and structure-property correlations are discussed
