Nella nostra civiltà la fotografia occupa una posizione centrale, dal punto di vista non solo artistico, ma anche socio-antropologico e filosofico. Lo sguardo e il comportamento dell'uomo contemporaneo si collegano strettamente ai dispositivi ottici e occorre prendere coscienza del fatto che la macchina fotografica (nelle sue successive trasformazioni) non è solo uno strumento, uno dei tanti che si sono andati aggiungendo al nostro sempre più ampio armamentario tecnico, per rendere possibili visioni più precise o non raggiungibili dall'occhio umano. Essa è anche una sorta di organo ottico generale, avvolgente, di cui si è dotata la nostra civiltà, un organo che riassume in sè pratiche e saperi diversi da quelli che caratterizzavano le civiltà precedenti. Le fotografie non sono dunque semplicemente nuove immagini che hanno fatto seguito ai dipinti, agli affreschi, ai disegni, alle stampe già prodotte in precedenza (anche se vengono inevitabilmente a far parte di questo immenso universo iconografico), ma soprattutto complessi contenitori di relazioni e modalità di oggettivazione che governano il nostro modo di stare nel mondo. Se è vero infatti che l'esigenza di conoscenza e di comprensione della realtà dentro e intorno a sé che l'uomo esprime in una data civiltà produce le tecnologie adatte a soddisfarla, è anche vero che da esse deriva lo sguardo che in questa civiltà si diffonde e viene praticato. Uno dei primi teorici della fotografia, lo statunitense Oliver W. Holmes, formula la nota definizione "specchio dotato di memoria" (Holmes, 1959) i , nella quale sta racchiusa la realizzazione di un desiderio antico quanto la civiltà occidentale: poter fissare un'immagine effimera in forma stabile. Holmes fa convergere nell'invenzione ottocentesca la teoria democriteo-epicureo-lucreziana dei "simulacri" e le antiche fantasie sugli specchi (peraltro anche evocate in epoca appena pre-industriale dallo scrittore visionario Tiphaigne de la Roche, che preannuncia fantascientificamente l'invenzione della fotografia-Tiphaigne de la Roche, 1760) ii e al tempo stesso indica le radici che l'idea della fotografia ha nella filosofia platonica, questione richiamata anche da Susan Sontag (Sontag, 1973, p. 3-23) iii , e nella teologia cristiana. La fotografia nasce dunque al termine del lungo processo che vede costantemente dialogare, nella millenaria tradizione artistica greco-cristiana, immagine e realtà, ombre, specchi e luce (Stoichita, 1997) iv. Ma l'invenzione si colloca anche in un punto cruciale del percorso di secolarizzazione che porta alla modernità, come anche conferma John Berger quando scrive: "La macchina fotografica ha forse sostituito l'occhio di Dio? Il declino della religione coincise con lo sviluppo della fotografia. La cultura del capitalismo ha forse costretto Dio nella fotografia?" (Berger, 1980, P. 61) v. Infatti, nel passaggio dal sacro al tecnologico, è una macchina inventata nel clima della rivoluzione borghese-industriale e in corrispondenza del pensiero positivista (Valtorta, 2003) vi , a incaricarsi di registrare in modo stabile le immagini che fanno parte della nostra esperienza (Signorini, 2007, p. 57) vii. Si tratta di immagini non fatte con le mani, ma fatte in modo altro. E a questo proposito Roland Barthes, riflettendo sul suo stupore davanti alla fotografia scrive che esso, forse "affonda le sue radici nella sostanza religiosa di cui sono imbevuto", e prosegue: "forse che non si può dire di lei quello che dicevano i Bizantini dell'immagine di Cristo (…), e cioè che non era fatta da mano d'uomo, che era acheiropóietos?" (Barthes, 1980, p. 83) viii. A partire da questa idea di un'immagine non fatta dalla mano umana, si può pensare che il percorso dalla raffigurazione del sacro alla narrazione del mondano coincida con uno spostamento dell'arte verso una registrazione delle immagini che può essere definita antiumanistica, cioè generata direttamente dalla

Polisensorialità fra arte, grafica e fotografia/Multi-sensoriality between art, graphics and photography, Skira, Milano 2019. Per accostarci alle ricerche fotografiche di Franco Grignani, partiamo da alcune considerazioni di carattere generale sul rapporto tra fotografia a astrazione. La definizione di fotografia e astratta contiene infatti una grande contraddizione, in termini retorici diremmo un ossimoro. La fotografia, è noto, è universalmente riconosciuta fin dalla sua invenzione come l'arte della realtà 1 : prescindendo dalla complessa discussione di che cosa sia "realtà", intendiamo dire che l'immagine fotografica per esistere deve obbligatoriamente fare riferimento al reale visibile che sta davanti all'obiettivo della macchina, cioè a ciò che chiamiamo referente 2. Non solo la maggior parte delle fotografie sia storiche sia contemporanee nascono da intenzioni di tipo descrittivo, ma l'atto fotografico stesso consiste in un prelievo dal reale visibile: una condizione che ha portato molti studiosi e artisti a pensare alla fotografia come a un ready made 3. Che cosa significa dunque fotografia astratta? Può davvero la fotografia avere a che fare con i complessi processi dell'astrazione, cioè con una modalità del percepire e del pensare che si oppone alla definizione del contingente e del concreto per volgersi invece a strutture basate sul generale e l'universale negando in toto la rappresentazione? 4 Come è noto, l'interesse per le forme astratte nasce in seno alle avanguardie, con atteggiamenti diversi dal Cubismo al Futurismo, dall'Astrattismo al Costruttivismo, accomunati però dal rifiuto dei contenuti naturalistici dell'arte e dalla sottolineatura, al contrario, degli elementi formali e strutturali, che vengono a costituire la sostanza stessa dell'opera. Come sappiamo, tale scelta, in seno alla cultura modernista del Novecento, non solo mette in evidenza la soggettività dell'artista ma, anche, indaga i codici stessi del farsi dell'arte, in senso soprattutto mentale, come ha ben indicato molti anni fa Filiberto Menna in La linea analitica dell'arte moderna 5. Dans l'oeuvre prolifique de Paolo Gioli, aussi bien picturale et graphique que photographique et ... more Dans l'oeuvre prolifique de Paolo Gioli, aussi bien picturale et graphique que photographique et cinématographique, riche en intrications, stratifications et "virtuosismes" de langage, un cycle de travail tout à fait particulier, datant des années 80, mérite notre attention. Il s'agit d'une série de recherches réalisées au Polaroid, conçues comme des "hommages" rendus à certains pionniers de la photographie tels que Niepce, Bayard, Cameron, Poitevin, Marey et Eakins. On trouve également, dans certains films de cette période, des références à d'autres pionniers de la photo comme Talbot, ou à des précurseurs du cinéma comme Muybridge et Londe, tandis que d'autres polaroids de la même décennie revisitent les tableaux de peintres tels que Courbet ou Van Gogh, Dürer, Signorelli, Piero della Francesca ou encore Mantegna. Mais toute l'oeuvre de Gioli, prise dans sa continuité, est abondamment tissue de citations qui vont de Duchamp à Michals, de Buñuel à Escher et/ou Rothko, pour n'en citer que quelques-uns, en une constellation de références dont il est et sera important de déchiffrer et comprendre la profonde signification, qui va bien au-delà du simple dispositif créatif de l'"hommage". Dans ces années 80, Gioli a déjà opéré sa mutation fondamentale, son désengagement de la peinture d'où il vient, en faveur du cinéma et de la photographie, médiums auxquels il restera toujours fidèle sans jamais délaisser toutefois la peinture, qui deviendra au fil du temps une sorte de "refoulé" toujours prêt à affleurer. Il a également déjà réalisé des cycles d'oeuvres photographiques importants, mais l'intérêt tout particulier qu'il porte à ces pionniers de la photo, son insistance à vouloir remonter aux origines de cet art ont valeur de rite initiatique par lequel il cherche (et obtient probablement aux plus hauts niveaux) une légitimité définitive dans le monde de la photo. Avec ses figures en mouvement et ses couleurs jubilatoires, le cycle de polaroids intitulé Eakins/Marey. L'homme dé-composé, qui date de 1982-83, met en évidence la volonté de Gioli de faire dialoguer entre elles les images photographiques réalisées par deux personnalités différentes: d'un côté Thomas Eakins, peintre américain anticonformiste, célèbre pour ses études de nu masculin qui lui valurent d'être ostracisé par la société puritaine dans laquelle il évoluait; de l'autre Etienne-Jules Marey, le génial physiologiste français à qui l'on doit l'invention de méthodes scientifiques novatrices pour l'étude du mouvement des corps, qu'ils soient humains ou non. Les deux hommes, bien qu'avec des finalités différentes, surent déceler dans la photo un instrument fabuleux pour analyser, décomposer et "raconter" le corps. "En partant de l'homme de Eakins je suis remonté à l'homme de Marey. Puis j'ai "re-composé" leurs deux hommes, essayant de construire un lieu unique, pour eux" écrit l'artiste dans un texte où il réfléchit sur les motivations de sa recherche. "Leur histoire en noir et blanc a stimulé mon imagination, et mon imagination est en couleurs. Dans la forêt libérée de leurs figures dé-composées de corps, j'ai découvert des actions et des modes de déplacement dont n'ont jamais rêvé ces "faiseurs d'images" qu'étaient Eakins et Marey". A la différence d'autres recherches qui rendent hommage à un seul artiste à la fois, Gioli effectue, dans le cas qui nous intéresse, un rapprochement singulier entre deux personnalités différentes, simulant un contact et faisant coexister les images des deux grands expérimentateurs du XIX e siècle, précurseurs du cinéma. Pour un artiste comme lui qui, depuis toujours, cultive une idée de l'art capable de saisir sous tous les angles les diverses disciplines et qui ressent la nécessité d'une créativité totale et englobante, le croisement entre l'enquête scientifique artistiquement illustrée de Marey, et la plasticité de l'art mis en scène sur un mode technico-scientifique par Eakins, constitue une situation exemplaire. Eakins/Marey. L'homme dé-composé est un travail scrupuleux d'exploration, de déstructuration et de re-composition décalée de figures inconnues des deux artistes en raison
* Una giovane fotografa, Barbara Brojanigo, mia studentessa dal 1995 al 1997 presso il CFP Riccar... more * Una giovane fotografa, Barbara Brojanigo, mia studentessa dal 1995 al 1997 presso il CFP Riccardo Bauer-ex Umanitaria di Milano, sosteneva con ostinazione che il fotografo è assolutamente in grado di controllare dall'inizio alla fine ogni sua fotografia, e che il caso in fotografia non può esistere. Dalla sua insistenza è nata l'idea di questo scritto, che le dedico. Ancora una volta occorre partire da Walter Benjamin. Nel 1931 nella Piccola storia della fotografia egli scriveva parole ormai note: "La natura che parla alla macchina fotografica è (...) una natura diversa da quella che parla all'occhio; diversa specialmente per questo, che al posto di uno spazio elaborato consapevolmente dall'uomo, c'è uno spazio elaborato inconsciamente". Giungeva così a definire l'esistenza di un inconscio ottico del tutto simile all'inconscio istintivo individuato dalla psicoanalisi (1). Benjamin non vedeva la macchina fotografica come naturale prolungamento dell'occhio dell'uomo ma, in senso più problematico, indicava la bipolarità uomo-macchina: in questo interstizio, in questo slittamento fra il comportamento dell'occhio e quello della macchina-in questo baratro, forse-intuiva manifestarsi il dominio dell'imprevedibilità, della non-intenzionalità, di quell'elemento che sfugge al controllo umano e che chiamiamo caso. Aristotele definiva tò autòmaton un fatto provocato da un agente non dotato di capacità di scelta, per un impulso non guidato ma, invece, casuale, accidentale. L'operazione fotografica lascia spazio al caso proprio in virtù di quell'automatismo che ad un certo punto del lavoro e in una certa misura sempre interviene e concorre a far nascere l'immagine. Anni Cinquanta: un punto di arrivo Per una analisi dei mutamenti dell'identità della fotografia, può essere interessante ipotizzare che la storia della fotografia si divida fondamentalmente in tre fasi. Nella fase ottocentesca il fotografo si trova impegnato a lottare per conoscere e possedere la tecnica (scoperta, sfida, stupore). Fase costitutiva per la fotografia, grandiosa, profonda, nella quale la sempre più certa capacità di governare la tecnica inizia il suo dialogo con il reale. Il problema dell'intervento del caso non si pone neppure, nè mai la cultura positivisticaavrebbe tollerato una tale eventualità. Poi, per tutta la prima metà del Novecento viene prodotto un grande sforzo, creativo e anche teorico, per affermare la possibilità da parte del fotografo di un controllo intimo, assoluto dei processi della macchina e degli esiti del suo lavoro. Fase di perfezionamento e di tensione verso l'ideale fusione dell'elemento estetico e dell'elemento tecnico. I primi segnali interessanti vengono già a cavallo del secolo dal Pittorialismo: la fotografia, per conquistare una identità importante, la dignità dell'arte, deve vincere la meccanicità dell'immagine, denigrando e ponendo la tecnica sullo sfondo, ad evidenziare l'intervento della mano e della decisione umana. Eppure, se l'operazione meccanica della ripresa viene sottovalutata, per converso è tenuto nella massima considerazione l'altro lato tecnico della fotografia, quello chimico, che per i Pittorialisti è fondamentale per inventare ed esibire raffinate forme di stampa, di effetto pittorico sì, ma di indiscutibile, profonda natura fotografica (si pensi, per esempio, all'insistenza di Robert Demachy nel porre fra le abilità massime del fotografo la capacità di controllo assoluto del lavoro chimico). La desiderata coincidenza fra tecnica ed estetica trionfa negli anni Trenta e Quaranta. Simbolo assoluto di questo momento è la straight photography di Weston e Adams: essa dice ad alta voce che la fotografia è tale solo se tutti gli elementi del processo tecnico posti sotto il controllo del fotografo sanno produrre un "effetto fotografico" totale. Il fotografo previsualizzerà la realtà, e organizzerà la visione e la resa finale dell'opera esclusivamente all'interno della logica del mezzo, che trova in se stesso, nella sua integrità e nella sua autonomia tutti gli elementi per costruire l'arte. Visione umana e visione fotografica si identificano. In assenza di previsualizzazione il lavoro del fotografo sarà solo un insieme di meccaniche, casuali coincidenze, privo di significato ai fini della definizione dell'essenza della fotografia. La giovane pragmatica cultura americana, bisognosa di autodefinirsi con esattezza, trova nella fotografia un'arte che le è assai congeniale-come già aveva sottolineato Paul Strand fin dagli anni Dieci-e non può permettere che il caso, elemento deviante, si introduca nella linearità del processo creativo manomettendolo. Certamente non sul piano degli esiti nè sul piano ideologico ma sicuramente sul piano dell'intenzionalità, vi è continuità fra le certezze dei grandi americani e l'assolutezza del momento decisivo di Cartier Bresson, altra fase molto rappresentativa sul piano simbolico della positività del rapporto fra il fotografo e l'apparecchio fotografico. Siamo nel maturo dopoguerra, la fotografia europea cerca di capire e riplasmare una realtà distrutta, mortificata, segnata da errori e brutture. In fotografia, è la forma storica del reportage classico ad incaricarsi di sostenere l'estrema convinzione che uomo e macchina possano lavorare insieme. La posizione bressoniana rappresenta il punto di arrivo del prolungato sogno dell'umanesimo che vuole che l'uomo sappia padroneggiare le macchine. Nell'ideale del momento decisivo, che porta la data 1952, culmina infatti la ricerca di una logica armonia che va ben oltre le origini della fotografia e giunge almeno fino ai desideri di sistematicità dei prospettici rinascimentali. Esso si colloca proprio a metà del Novecento e porta dentro di sè la tremante percezione esistenzialista di una realtà irrimediabilmente in
Quando Gabriele Basilico pubblicò Milano.Ritratti di fabbriche, nel 1982, presentai una scelta di... more Quando Gabriele Basilico pubblicò Milano.Ritratti di fabbriche, nel 1982, presentai una scelta di fotografie di quel libro su " Progresso Fotografico " , la rivista della cui redazione facevo parte in quegli anni (1). Fu in quell'occasione che lo conobbi. Ricordo che mi interessava molto l'espressione antropomorfizzante che costituiva il titolo del libro, con la quale l'autore personificava le architetture delle fabbriche milanesi. Quel ricorso di Basilico al dispositivo della personificazione, unitamente al mio interesse e impegno verso i problemi della politica e del sociale, mi portavano a interrogarmi su come le fabbriche potessero essere rappresentate completamente prive delle figure degli operai: così infatti il libro le mostrava. Anche Carlo Bertelli nel suo testo di presentazione scriveva: " Qui la città operaia è tale senza operai " (2). Alla fine degli anni Settanta, quando Basilico svolgeva questa ricerca (preceduta da un lavoro su Milano dal titolo Milano ambiente urbano, presentata nel 1978 presso la galleria Il Diaframma – 3), Milano non era totalmente definibile in una identità industriale-operaia: la città non era (e non è mai stata) solo e unicamente una città dell'industria, ma anche e fortemente una città del commercio e dell'esercizio del credito, insomma una città del terziario: nella percezione dei suoi abitanti, come scrive Marco Romano nel suo contributo nel libro, forse " prevalentemente un complesso di case e uffici " al quale Basilico preferiva " una rassegna sistematica e il più possibile completa di tutte le zone industriali della città " (4). Le fabbriche, presenti e visibili in molte aree del territorio urbano, o nascostamente sedimentate nella memoria, anche se, talvolta, trascurate o ignorate, potevano venire tutte alla luce ed essere Milano. Si trattava dunque di capire la possibilità di ritratti di fabbriche in assenza di figura umana. Luogo della fabbrica e figura dell'operaio erano in quel momento storico ancora indissociabili. L'iconografia, oltre che l'economia e la vita di tanti, voleva così. Mi risolsi, a quel tempo, a pensare che il libro, nonostante l'assenza degli operai, li raccontasse ugualmente, indirettamente: il luogo rappresentava le persone e tutta una civiltà produttiva e un'umanità si incarnavano in quegli edifici e in quelle strade. Era accaduto che, mentre in realtà aveva luogo il declino stesso dell'economia industriale, Basilico scegliesse proprio le fabbriche come elementi guida per condurre una indagine visiva dello spazio urbano milanese. E' verosimile pensare che egli individuasse nelle fabbriche, in quel momento storico, degli appropriati simboli di Milano, da estrarre dal contesto urbano più generale, organizzare in una mappatura e reiteratamente ri-presentare all'attenzione dell'osservatore in una ricerca che potesse aspirare a costituire, nel suo insieme, un ritratto della città. L'ultimo ritratto possibile di quella città anche e ancora operaia la cui identità sarebbe per sempre mutata. Milano. Ritratti di fabbriche è una ricerca svolta in un momento particolare, poco oltre il quale non sarebbe stata più possibile, né così significativa. Un tempo finale, già in bilico: infatti i ritratti di fabbriche che Basilico realizza per parlare di Milano non sono simboli del momento più compiutamente industriale e operaio della città, ma del passaggio della sua economia alla fase postindustriale: di lì a poco le architetture industriali, grandi e piccole, presenti nelle diverse zone della città da lui prese in considerazione, si sarebbero avviate a diventare archeologia industriale. Nei due brevi testi con i quali Basilico presenta il suo progetto nel volume, egli non dice esplicitamente perché abbia scelto le fabbriche. Parla di una ricerca svoltasi dalla primavera 1978 a tutto il 1980 e partita come " servizio fotografico sulla città " commissionato dall'Istituto Nazionale di Urbanistica. Nelle sue parole, tutto sembra nascere da una sorta di improvvisa inedita percezione dello spazio urbano: lo stato semideserto della città nel week end di Pasqua, la luminosità eccezionale e la nitidezza provocate dal vento straordinario di quei giorni lo mettono come magicamente davanti alla plasticità delle strade e delle facciate delle fabbriche, in una condizione di estraniazione e di rivelazione di un paesaggio e di strutture " nitide e isolate " mai viste prima, " senza il movimento quotidiano, senza le auto parcheggiate, senza gente, senza rumori " (5). Quello che Basilico descrive è molto probabilmente il sentimento della sua personale nascita alla fotografia, a quella fotografia consapevole e metodica, seppur sentimentale, che lo avrebbe instancabilmente impegnato fino ai giorni nostri. Sempre, il tema amato sarebbe stato la città, poi la metropoli e più in generale il paesaggio industriale dell'Occidente nel suo complesso divenire postindustriale, nel suo transitare dalla matura modernità alla postmodernità. Noi dobbiamo osservare con attenzione che questa nascita avvenne esattamente sul tema delle fabbriche, scelte in un momento di transizione. La sparizione delle figure degli operai, ma anche di ogni altra figura nelle strade, delle automobili e di ogni altro elemento di disturbo, prende, alla distanza di trent'anni dalla quale la analizziamo, il significato di uno stato di attesa del paesaggio e dell'identità stessa della città. Lo stesso vuoto, la stessa dilatazione dello spazio che vorremmo definire di tono urbanistico-esistenziale che ritroviamo nell'opera di molti fotografi
Alcuni anni fa, nel 2003, scrissi la postfazione alla edizione italiana della biografia di Tina M... more Alcuni anni fa, nel 2003, scrissi la postfazione alla edizione italiana della biografia di Tina Modotti di Patricia Albers. 1 Mi parve, allora, che la sua celebre frase tratta da una lettera a Edward Weston del 1926 che l'autrice pone alla fine del libro, potesse fare da chiave di lettura non solo di tutta la sua vita, ma anche della sua opera: " accetto il tragico conflitto tra la vita che cambia continuamente e la forma che la fissa immutabilmente ". 2 Ne resto convinta, così come continuo a giudicare centrali alcune altre affermazioni di Modotti, anch'esse molto citate, contenute in un'altra lettera scritta a Weston nel 1925, che qui è utile ancora una volta richiamare: " io non posso – come tu una volta mi hai proposto " risolvere il problema della vita col perdermi nel problema dell'arte ". Non solo io non posso farlo ma sento che il problema della vita ostacola il mio problema dell'arte. (…) sono sempre in lotta per plasmare la mia vita secondo il mio temperamento e i miei bisogni – in altre parole metto troppa arte nella mia vita – troppa energia – e di conseguenza non mi resta molto da dare all'arte ". 3 Se la radice del termine arte ci restituisce i lontani significati di andare, mettere in moto, Tina Modotti è artista della propria vita. Ma se la fotografia è per lei un possibile modo per cercare di unire la vita all'arte, essa è però solo uno dei modi. Questa icona femminile del Novecento ha infatti condotto la sua esistenza impegnandosi a vivere tutti i " personaggi " che si è trovata a interpretare nei diversi contesti socio-culturali nei quali è transitata, in strettissima vicinanza con i suoi diversi compagni di vita e amici, artisti o militanti politici: operaia in filanda, migrante, cucitrice e sarta, attrice teatrale e poi cinematografica, modella per fotografi e pittori, fotografa e rivoluzionaria, militante comunista e soccorritrice di chi è oppresso e soffre nella clandestinità, clandestina lei stessa. E' possibile che Tina Modotti abbia ascoltato l'idea di Edward Weston (ma anche, non va dimenticato, le suggestioni riguardanti la vita e l'arte giunte a lei, in età più giovanile, da Roubaix de l'Abrie Richey detto Robo, così come il ricordo di se stessa attrice) spingendola però oltre la fotografia, e abbia risolto davvero la sua esistenza nell'arte, includendo però in questa, femminilmente, rapporti affettivi, creatività del vivere, politica. Quando, nella seconda parte della sua vita, dopo aver vissuto il sogno della coincidenza tra arte e amore e poi la fusione ideale di arte e politica, a questa si offre infine unicamente, fa tuttavia ancora una volta della sua vita una sorta di fatto artistico. La sua indole ricettiva e mutevole le permette di trasformarsi nell'interpretare molti modi di vivere l'amore, la bellezza, l'immagine di sé, il suo ruolo nella società, forte o fragile che fosse la sua persona nella spinta dei sentimenti e della storia. Animata da quella viva fame di cultura tipica degli autodidatti, pronta a " un lungo e sofferto riscatto dalla propria condizione di immigrata senza storia e senza cultura " 4 , Tina Modotti è certamente una fotografa sensibile alle istanze dell'arte del suo tempo; tende inoltre a esprimersi anche attraverso la scrittura; ma è soprattutto una attrice, nel senso più complesso del termine, e non solo perché lo è stata da giovanissima, ma perché agisce se stessa sulla scena della propria vita, è una sorta di performer che cerca di volta in volta quella forma di cui lei stessa si preoccupa e scrive. In questo senso la serie di ritratti che Weston le fa mentre recita poesie (nota anche come Serie cinematografica di Tina che recita, 1924), in quanto ritratto non unico ma raccontato in più tempi, la rappresenta alla perfezione.
