The only constructions made from stone were the Fortress of Suceava (at the ending of the 14th century), the Princely Court and some churches (in the 15th and 16th centuries). In that situation, the fire was a common event which could appeared by accident and the destruction was minor and it was located in a part of the city. A different situation was during the war when the city could be destroyed by the enemy and the demolition could be observed on a larger surface. Obviously, it is difficult to link some historical events which involved massive destructions in Suceava, like the military campaigns in the 15th and 16th centuries, with the results of the archaeological discoveries. The events in the history of Suceava can be unearthed by the archaeologists, if the objects and the context are well-documented.

During the Middle Ages, when Suceava was the residence seat of the Moldavian rulers (until the 16th century), a Princely Court, two fortresses and many churches were built here. A part of these medieval constructions have survived until now. This remarkable heritage is the main pride of the locals (the authorities and common people) in Suceava today and represents one of the symbols of the city. At the same time, we observe that the medieval city with its important constructions is situated in the contemporary downtown area and the medieval constructions are suffocated by the modern buildings and the roads between them. In time, the pressure has grown constantly because the urban development is concentrated in this central area and the local authorities continue to accept new constructions in already crowded area.

Probota Monastery (Suceava county).
In the last 50 years, a lot of archaelogical researches were made in the Probota Monastery (Suceava county). The most important researches started in 1994 and ended in 2000, as part of the restauration works made in the entire monastery. In time, some landscaping works in the monastery were preceded by new archaeological researches,
which were very useful to observe construction details significant for understanding the history of the Treasure Tower (situated in the North-West part of the monastery) and its present conservation conditions.

The researches were linked with the decision of the communist authorities to build a modern city in Suceava. Before the construction works, a large part from the old houses situated in the downtown was demolished between 1950-1955 and in the central space of the city the archaeological researches started at that time. The interest for the history and the monuments from Suceava were much older, but rigorous researches are made in Suceava only for 60 years. In the city, the most important monuments were excavated: the Fortress of Suceava, the Scheia Fortress, the Princely Court and all medieval churches. In the same time, during the construction of the new buildings situated in the perimeter of the old Armenian district a lot of discoveries were made. These researches were essential for the understanding the history of the city and the artefacts discovered throughout time enriched museum collections from Bucharest, Jassy and Suceava.
