The sustainable construction of the future, besides low energy consumption and greenhouse gas emi... more The sustainable construction of the future, besides low energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions must also adopt the principle of reusing wastes generated by the production chain that impact the environment. One of the most impacting wastes generated by the aluminum production chain is fly ash. Geopolymers are cementitious materials with a three-dimensional structure formed by chemical activation of aluminosilicates. According to studies some ashes have proven to be suitable sources of Al and Si for the geopolymerization reaction. One of the most important aspects in the commercializing these products is their behavior in a plastic state. The workability of fresh geopolymer paste can be measured using several common tests used for Portland cement concrete, such as flow and slump; however, a more in-depth characterization of their rheology is essential for understanding their basic setting mechanisms. The objective of this work was to evaluate the rheological behavior of the D...

The productive chains of large companies, unfortunately, generate waste or tailings that contribute to this reality that has become the focus of discussion. This environmental issue becomes extremely important for the society of the state of Pará, since it has great mining potential focused on aluminum production, for example, and naturally by its process, produces waste and tailings that are deposited in form of large ponds. Aiming to make a positive contribution to society and the environment, we chose to use bauxite washing tailings as a source of aluminosilicates for the production of geopolymers that are three-dimensional cementitious materials formed by alkaline activation. Therefore, this research aims to verify the possibility of transforming bauxite tailings into a geopolymeric binder of mechanical strength equivalent to Portland cement. With Davidovits r...

The concentration of the activator influences the mechanical performance of the geopolymers. The aim of this research was to evaluate the mechanical performance of Davidovits (SiO2/Al2O3) geopolymers of 2.09, 1.66 and 2.03 ratio synthesized with different NaOH molar concentrations (5, 10, 15, 30 and 40 Molar) on the activator. The mechanical strength test was performed at 24 hours, 7 and 28 days of curing the geopolymers. The geopolymerization reaction was conducted at room temperature of 28°C. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (Na2 SiO3) 10 Molar were used as the activator. The geopolymer based on metakaolin of 2.09 showed better mechanical resistance, followed by the material with 10% red mud and 90% metakaolin and50% metakaolin and 50% red mud. with 2.03 and 1.66 SiO2/Al2O3 ratios, respectively. In sequence, the materials were characterized by XRF, XRD, laser particle si...

Aluminosilicates particles, carbon and ceramic fibres were used as reinforcement materials. The effects of reinforcement materials on the flexural strength, linear-shrinkage, thermo-physical properties and microstructure of the geopolymers at room and high temperature (1200 °C) were studied. The results indicated that the toughness of the composites is increased 110.4% for geopolymer reinforced by ceramic fibres (G-AF) at room temperature. The presence of particles improved the flexural behaviour 265% for geopolymer reinforced by carbon fibres and particles after exposure to 1200 ºC. Linear-shrinkage for geo-polymer reinforced by ceramic fibres and particles and the geopolymer G-AF compared with reference sample (without fibres and particles) is improved by 27.88% and 7.88% respectively at 900 °C. The geopolymer materials developed in this work are porous materials with low thermal conductivity and good mechanical properties with potential thermal insulation applications for building applications.
