To this special issue, we invited some of these paper presenters to submit articles on their respective case studies. ... We chose contributions that did particular justice to, or aimed to expand or sometimes even challenge, the idea of entanglements in media history.

Let’s historize it! Jugendmedien im 20. Jahrhundert, ed. by Aline Maldener/Clemens Zimmermann, 2018

Here both the specialist talk programmes of the Jugendfunk and youth-oriented pop music programmes are of particular interest. The focus is on the everyday significance of radio for young listeners. In general, this medium was appreciated as a versatile information and entertainment medium. However, for a long time the young listener was an unknown being for many editors and programme planners. While the early Jugendfunk after 1945 first of all spoke educationally to or about young people, in the 1950s it also began to talk with them and hence addressed their listening expectations much better than before. With regard to international pop music, which gained cultural significance for young people in the course of the 1950s, West Germany’s public service radio was lagging behind with its programme offers. At the same time, the asymmetrical competition for listeners, fought especially with programmes operating from beyond the federal broadcasting system, like the American Forces Network, the British Forces Network or Radio Luxemburg, promoted future-oriented innovations in niches of the public service entertaining music programmes. Hence, the treatment of young listeners by radio editors is to be characterized as a history of becoming familiar with each other and as a learning process.

The transnational and transmedial dimensions of media and communication throughout history have n... more The transnational and transmedial dimensions of media and communication throughout history have not always been adequately recognised. In this research report we propose the concept of entanglement as a means of better understanding the dynamic interconnectedness of media across semiotic, technological, institutional and political boundaries in history. Entanglement is a concept that can be employed in order to problematize the presumed points of departure and the linear understandings of development, production and reception that often characterize media-history scholarship. Moreover, an entangled media histories perspective throws light on social and communicative action in general and can thus enrich any historical study. The report outlines, and invites discussion of, the theoretical and methodological framework of the transnational network ‘Entangled Media Histories’, which since 2013 has been a forum for co-operation in research and teaching between media historians in Sweden, Germany and Great Britain.

Our main academic aim has been to challenge the traditional blind spots in perspective and common methodological nationalism of media historical scholarship. Thus far, media history has tended to be discussed almost exclusively within national contexts (which also includes most “comparative” studies) and from a mono-medial perspective, focussing exclusively on one medium at a time such as for example the press, radio or television. The fact that there are – and always have been – manifold cross-border and cross-medial interrelation has not always been properly highlighted.
