The purpose of this preliminary mission was to better define the various studies to be carried out on the scientific level for a better knowledge of these sites.

The history of the Templars and Hospitallers orders started with the crusades, but continued until the French Revolution, along with their large-scale network of “commanderies” extended throughout Europe. The main object of this study is their architecture, and how it demonstrates the main goals and strategies of the military orders, told through their rich archives. By connecting this written heritage with the built one, this project permits us a more complete understanding of their practical, daily operation. Far from the fantasies about the Templar warriors, and the relative oblivion of their brothers the Hospitallers, these orders were a very rational and structured organization, especially the Hospitallers, who in fact maintained the heritage of the Templars after their fall. Their lordship, at least in Europe, was less military than economic, religious and judiciary. Therefore, their buildings are bounded to these functions: their castles were not for war but served as houses, barns and churches. Finally, many heraldic or military ornaments were only used to demonstrate the power, which was real and symbolic, however challenged, of the seigneur commandeur. The Franche-Comté, as a coherent and stable region during both medieval and early modern periods, is a favorable space to observe this strategical administration in the longue durée. If the lack of medieval sources causes a need to look at modern sources, such as minutes of visits and cost estimates, it creates also an opportunity to understand the modern point of view, goal and method: a pragmatic and symbolic struggle to maintain a feudal and sovereign seigniory in the early modern period.

Far from the fantasies about the Templar warriors and their brothers Hospitallers, the study of the architecture of the commanderies highlight a very structured organization, since the crusades to the French Revolution. A connection between built heritage and written heritage (medieval and modern archives) reveals a seigniory less military than economic, religious and judiciary. The goal of the rigorous management of this architecture, as pragmatic as symbolic, is the maintenance of a feudal and sovereign, however challenged, seigniory, in the longue durée, until the early modern period.
