Due to the particular geological features of the sediments, only lithic artefacts have been preserved. Moreover, these artefacts are located in a single well-defined layer. First dates on heated lithic artefacts suggest a chronological attribution at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum, between the end of the Badegoulian and the beginning of the Early Middle Magdalenian. This dating is supported both by the study of the lithic operating chains on flint blocks and by the discovery of backed microbladelets during the screening process. The occupation is materialized through several concentrations of flint and other rocks. Therefore, a careful manual excavation has been done in two places: the East locus, with four lithic concentrations, and the West locus, with a heap of flint next to a likely fireplace. The first study of flint industry highlights two operating chains: blade and bladelet chains. A detailed study of the West locus also allowed a better understanding of the toolmakers’ intent. Indeed, if these blade and bladelet productions are sometimes independent, refittings highlight a co-production between these two industries: a part of bladelet’s cores are initially flakes of blade production.

In this work, we analyze specimens from five sites, including the recently excavated Solutrean site of Landry, to establish whether their presence in archaeological layers and peculiar aspect are due to natural processes or human agency. We study the spatial distribution of gravels at Landry and submit archaeological gravels from the five sites, natural formations, Landry sediment sieving, and polishing experiments with a rotary tumbling machine to morphometric, colorimetric, microscopic, and textural analyses. Our results indicate the lustrous gravels found at the five sites result from deliberate selection and suggest their shiny appearance is the consequence of human agency, possibly resulting from prolonged contact with a soft material such as animal skin. Ethnographic accounts indicate that these gravels may have been used for magico-religious ritual purposes (charms, sorcery, divination etc.), in games, as elements of musical instruments, and as items serving other social and personal purposes. We argue that these objects reflect a cultural innovation emerged during the Gravettian and continued into the Solutrean.

When analyzing Paleolithic lithic assemblages, it is common to classify flakes into categories based on their morphological and technological features, which are linked to the position of the flake in the reduction sequence and how removals are organized in a given production method. For the analysis of Middle Paleolithic lithic assemblages, two categories of flakes are commonly identified: core-edge flakes and pseudo-Levallois points. A third type, core-edge flakes with a limited back, is also commonly found in the archaeological literature, providing an alternative category whose definition does not match the two previous types but shares many of their morphological and technological features. The present study addresses whether these three flakes constitute discrete categories based on their morphological and technological attributes. 2D and 3D geometric morphometrics are employed on an experimental set composed of the three categories of flakes to quantify morphological variation. Machine learning models and principal components biplots are used to test the discreteness of the categories. The results indicate that geometric morphometrics succeed in capturing the morphological and technological features that characterize each type of product. Pseudo-Levallois points have the highest discreteness of the three technological products, and while some degree of mixture exists between core edge flakes and core edge flakes with a limited back, they are also highly distinguishable. We conclude that the three categories are discrete and can be employed in technological lists of products for the analysis of lithic assemblages and that geometric morphometrics is useful for testing for the validity of categories. When testing these technological categories, we stress the need for well-defined and shared lithic analytical units to correctly identify and interpret the technical steps and decisions made by prehistoric knappers and to properly compare similarities and differences between stone tool assemblages. These are key aspects for current research in which open datasets are becoming more and more common and used to build interpretative techno-cultural models on large geographical scales. Now more than ever, lithic specialists are aware of the need to overcome differences in taxonomies between different school traditions.
The long stratigraphic sequence of the Shungura Formation in the Lower Omo Valley documents 3 mil... more The long stratigraphic sequence of the Shungura Formation in the Lower Omo Valley documents 3 million years (Ma) of hominin evolution, which, when combined with detailed paleo‑depositional environmental data, opens new perspectives for understanding the complex interactions between hominin landscape use and the development of stone tool‑mediated activities. Stone tool assemblages produced by Paranthropus aethiopicus and/or a species of early Homo from ~ 2.3 Ma, reflect their ability to deal with the raw material scarce environment of the Lower Omo Valley. It remains to be seen whether this activity can be related to a single, brief occupation event or the expression of an emergent new adaptation. Here we report on the newly investigated site complex of OMO 79, which produced the first evidence for multiple phases of hominin tool‑making and use in the Shungura Formation. The development of this long‑lasting techno‑economic behavior marks a cognitive tipping point around 2.3 Ma in the Lower Omo Valley, evidenced by the adaptability of the early hominins to resource‑constrained environments. The earliest evidence for stone tool production in the Lower Omo Valley (southern Ethiopia) comes from Mem-ber F of the Shungura Formation, dated to between 2.324 ± 0.020 Ma and 2.271 ± 0.041 million-years (Ma) 1,2 , in an area that was frequented by hominins for more than 3 million years3–5 . This emergent behavior is documented by a large number of hominin occupations in varied depositional settings, all related to the meandering river floodplain deposits of the ancestral Omo River. The sudden development of tool-assisted behaviors in Member F 6 is unlikely linked to either biological or environmental factors as the two hominin taxa documented in Member F, Paranthropus aethiopicus and Homo sp., are equally present in underlying Member E 4,5 and from a similar environmental setting. Member F deposits are composed of low-energy alluvial sediments laid down by the meandering Omo River under semi-arid environmental conditions that emerged much earlier, as early as 2.8 Ma 7–9 . Importantly and in stark contrast with all other Early Pleistocene sites in eastern Africa 10–15 , the landscapes occupied by the Shungura hominins were devoid of predictable sources of abundant raw materials in the form of cobble conglomerates 6,16 . Whether this unprecedented behavioral adaptation of hominins to a raw material scarce environment is related to a unique, brief occupation or the expression of an emergent long-term tradition remains to be seen. Here we report on a recently discovered site complex, OMO 79, which provides important new data for the flexibility of early Oldowan toolmakers.
The eastern African Oldowan has been documented in multiple raw material contexts and physical en... more The eastern African Oldowan has been documented in multiple raw material contexts and physical environments and displays considerable differences in terms of technological complexity. The relative influence of percussion techniques and raw material quality are central to debates concerning hominin skill levels as a potential driver of change during the period between 2.6 and 2 million-years (Ma). The early Oldowan assemblages from the Shugura Formation play a key role in these debates due to a number of distinctive features, including the small size of the artefacts and poorly controlled flaking. Here we mobilize quantified and replicable experimental data in order to (a) assess the significance of the bipolar technique in the Omo archaeological assemblages and (b) discriminate the respective impact of raw materials, technical choices and knapper skill levels on the unique character of these assemblages. By combining descriptive statistics with regression tree models, our analysis demonstrates knapper skill level to be of minimal importance in this context for the production of sharp-edged flakes. The absence of a link between skill and knapping success reflects the combined effect of raw material constraints, the frequent use of the bipolar technique, and relatively simple technical objectives. Our analysis confirms the key role played by local environmental conditions in the unique appearance of the Shungura assemblages, a relationship which has been frequently suggested but never demonstrated. Beyond the operational and sensorimotor skills considered in most studies, we suggest that the diversity of early Oldowan assemblages should be better sought in the cognitive abilities developed by early toolmakers as a response to landscape learning and use, two elements of early human evolution that remain largely unexplored.

Their peculiarities are due to their roles as both a technological objective and in the management of core convexities to retain its geometric properties during reduction. In Middle Paleolithic contexts, these backed implements are commonly produced during Levallois and discoidal reduction sequences. Backed products from Levallois and discoidal reduction sequences often show common geometric and morphological features that complicate their attribution to one of these methods. This study examines the identification of experimentally produced discoidal and recurrent centripetal Levallois backed products (including all stages of reduction) based on their morphological features. 3D geometric morphometrics are employed to quantify morphological variability among the experimental sample. Dimensionality reduction though principal component analysis is combined with 11 machine learning models for the identification of knapping methods. A supported vector machine with polynomial kernel has been identified as the best model (with a general accuracy of 0.76 and an area under the curve [AUC] of 0.8). This indicates that combining geometric morphometrics, principal component analysis, and machine learning models succeeds in capturing the morphological differences of backed products according to the knapping method.

Through the archaeological remains excavated in its numerous layers, it provides a wealth of information about the technological tradition and behavior of its occupants. This study applies a morpho-technological methodological approach, combining 3D geometric morphometric and traditional technological analyses to the large cutting tools component sampled from two assemblages at the site. Our results reflect high morphological and technological variability and shed light on the manner in which the morphological patterns are related to technological decisions and preferences of the ancient knappers. The results support the notion that while the final form of the large cutting tools was substantially affected by the morphological characteristics of the selected raw materials, it was not deterministically dictated by environmental factors, but purposefully chosen by the knappers during raw material selection. This notion reflects the advanced planning capacities of the Early Acheulian hominins at the site. Furthermore, it demonstrates how a division of the large cutting tools category into two morphotypes through a decision taken at an early stage of production was already established at 'Ubeidiya. This appears to be one of the earliest expressions of this behavioral pattern, typical of substantially later Acheulian assemblages.

In both sites, the experimental cells have undergone significant changes over the five years of measurements. These are marked by slow downslope creep of lithic artefacts due to solifluction, rain creep, and the impact of debris fallen from the wall in the cave. The behaviour of bone material was significantly different from that of lithics, due to the activity of scavengers. This was responsible for scattering a high proportion of bone remains, and displacements were typically significant. Such activity was also responsible for a high number of bone elements being lost (1/3 to 2/3 of the bones). Weathering, mostly cracking and exfoliation, also affected dry bone material in the open-air cells. The measurements have highlighted the specific nature of the cave context, which plays a protective role for bone remains against meteoric agents. The talus at the entrance of the cavity was also characterized by a strong spatial heterogeneity in sedimentary processes, which may generate a differential preservation of the assemblages.

These changes occurred in the archaeological record between MIS 9 and MIS 6. This paper aims to evaluate the processes of technical change at work in Southern France, tracking innovations and persistent behaviours and potential shifts, to describe the process of transition and compare the Southeast and Southwest of France. We revised several major sites from Ardèche and Dordogne through the technological analysis of seven lithic assemblages in areas rich in good-quality raw materials, mostly flint. Technological analysis shows common features in lithic strategies and industries that can all be attributed to the Early Middle Palaeolithic. The features are a diversity of debitage methods and spatiotemporal management of the chaînes opératoires (ramification and artefact mobility). At the same time, algorithmic methods ( Système par Surface de Débitage Alternées : SSDA) continue to be used, in the same way as large cutting tools (LCTs), although they are rare (pebble tools, bifaces and ‘mixed matrices’). These LCTs are persistent technologies from the Acheulean technocomplex. Gradual mosaic-type changes in the lithic record are particularly well demonstrated through the sequence of Orgnac 3, where a local onset of Levallois technologies appears to occur. Both in the Southeast and Southwest of France, the Lower to Middle Palaeolithic transition records gradual and asynchronous behavioural changes as early as MIS 9 to MIS 6. These shifts are not only due to increased hominin cognition. Abilities of human groups to adapt to diversified environments and regional cultural processes may also have played a key role. Several lithic technocomplexes coexisted between MIS 9 and 6 in these two areas and although differences in local strategies are obvious, similar trajectories towards MP behaviour can be detected.

An exceptionally well-preserved Solutrean camp-site: Landry, has been recently uncovered at Boula... more An exceptionally well-preserved Solutrean camp-site: Landry, has been recently uncovered at Boulazac, close to Périgueux (southwestern France), as part of preventive excavations. This site, situated along the Isle riverbank, shows a high preservation of both its spatial configuration and lithic record. This can be seen in particular by the presence of areas spatially patterned with heated cobbles and pebbles, task-specific areas dedicated to the production and use of distinct formal tools, but also in engraved schist slabs displaying figurative and geometric designs as well as incised pebbles in dolerite.
The lithic assemblage is composed of more than 10,000 items, issued from several independent reduction sequences: blade debitage, flake debitage, and bifacial shaping. The tool component is dominated by end-scrapers on blades, together with a small number of broken pointes à cran and a broad range of bifacial and foliated tools, either in the form of preforms or as tools broken during the shaping process. Some bifacial tools show a high level of elaboration, while other have been roughly shaped, evidencing a marked diversity in the technical skills of the tools-makers.
The Solutrean group who occupied the site had access to a broad range of raw materials in the Isle river terraces: Senonian flint nodules, quartzite and dolerite pebbles, schist slabs, collected and exploited not only for producing tools but also for setting up domestic areas and fire places. In addition, more distant raw materials were introduced into the site: e.g. flint tools from the Bergerac area, close to the Dordogne river, and flint artefacts from the Fumel region, on the Lot riverbank, some more 70 km away. More distant raw-materials, such as the translucent flint from the Cher region, could also have been imported. This Solutrean camp-site may likely be related to other sites belonging to the same social network in an extended subsistence territory. Some 8 km up-stream, the cave of Combe-Saunière has yielded several hundreds of pointes à cran from various flint sources, while at the open-air site of Cantalouette 2, close to Bergerac, hundreds of foliated tools, or bay leaves, were produced and carried away.
The lithic record, spatial patternings and engraved slabs from Landry are currently analyzed using an interdisciplinary approach aiming at characterizing the geo-archaeological context and the induced complexity in the social organization of the late Solutrean hunther-gatherer groups.

From the beginning of the second to last interglacial period (Eemian), lithic industries show a proliferation of production conceptions, methods and techniques: Levallois, Discoid and SSDA debitage, laminar debitage, anvil debitage, and the shaping of pieces that were unique or adhered to a techno-type. This diversity of lithic production conceptions sometimes appears in archaeological assemblages in which distinct flaking and shaping chaînes opératoires coexist; for example, a mixed production conception associating flaking and shaping on the same matrix (raw material volume) has been observed in several assemblages.
This work addresses the question of inter- and intra site variability and its behavioral significance through a techno-economic analysis of lithic industries and an experimental procedure. For nine lithic assemblages from three sites in the Bergeracois region, Canatalouette 1, Combre Brune 2 and Combe Brune 3, each of the production methods was analyzed based on a quantitative evaluation of all the operational phases present from the procurement of lithic raw materials to the use of the products. The role of experimentation in this procedure is to create specific reference bases that can be compared with the lithic assemblages in order to obtain a better estimation of their techno-economic representivity.
The main goal is to give an account of the variability within the industries of the flaking and shaping productions, their possible interrelations and the objectives’ diversity in terms of blanks and produced tools. I tried to define the independence, the succession or the mixing of shaping and flaking operative schemes within these industries.
The economic functioning modes of the occupations are analyzed. Thanks to inter-sites comparisons and thanks to an experimental frame of reference, our approach was to look for evidences of export, import, transit, moving or carrying away of matrices.
The spatial settlement of sites within the territory of subsistence and the temporal dimension of duration and frequency of occupation are also discussed. I had to model the functioning modes of the occupations in relation to invested space and to the potential duration of activities.
The objective of this research is to propose coherent models of the functioning of human occupations at the beginning of the Middle Paleolithic in relation to their locations and potential complementarity within and across a single subsistence territory. The respective occupation types illustrated by the three sites studied are thus modeled and compared to other sites in the Dordogne and other regions.
Finally, I discuss the socio-economic behavior of human groups at different scales from the technical space to the occupied space. The specificity and complementarity of sites are addressed as well as the potential mobility of groups through the circulation of lithic artifacts and raw materials.
The results show that socio- economical behaviors observed as early as the beginning of the Middle Paleolithic already foreshadow the complexity of the later Mousterian industries. They could reflect rational and anticipated subsistence behaviors at different scales, which are freed in part from environmental contingencies.
