Spatial Data
The Copernicus Services which deal with mapping products, such as the Emergency Management Service, Services for Security Applications and the Land Monitoring Service require a range of basic reference data. This can include topographic maps (natural land surface and man-made features), hydrography, transport networks and land cover, digital elevation models, and aerial imagery. This data corresponds with the data sets outlined in the INSPIRE directive’s Annexes I, II and III.
Examples of geospatial reference data include:
Settlements |
Both formal (urban, suburban, rural, etc.) and informal (slums, Internally Displaced Person camps, etc.). |
---|---|
Industry and Utilities |
Industrial facilities and power stations, power plants, power lines, quarries, disposal sites). |
Hydrography |
Natural and artificial water features (e.g. streams, rivers, canals, lakes, reservoirs) which depict the water bodies and drainage network. |
Transport infrastructure |
Infrastructure related to transport networks (e.g. roads, tracks, trails, railways, bridges, train stations, harbours, airfields, heliports). |
Elevation |
Digital elevation models for land, ice and ocean surface. Includes terrestrial elevation, bathymetry and shoreline. |
Land cover |
The observed cover of the earth's surface, both in terms of natural and man-made features (e.g. cropland, grassland, forest, natural vegetation, bare soil, wetland, urban area). |
Population/Census |
The most reliable population statistics of a country and its sub-regions, containing distribution of demographic, economic and social data at a given moment in time. |
