Recent research indicates that inquiry-based practices may enhance students’ interest in STEM careers and challenge genderrelated STEM stereotypes. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of STEM inquiry-based learning activities on students’ interest in STEM careers, as well as on the social cognitive career theory (SCCT) dimensions (self-efficacy, personal goals, outcome expectations, interests, contextual support, and personal inputs), with a specific focus on gender. A quantitative approach was employed, whereby pre- and post-test measures were administered to a cohort of 190 Portuguese secondary school students, using the STEM Career Interest Survey. The results showed that, while the STEM inquiry-based learning activities did not alter the gender-based patterns of interest in STEM subjects and careers, they did contribute to a significant increase in students’ interest in these areas. It was found that these activities were particularly effective in promoting female students’ interest in STEM careers. A significant increase was observed in all SCCT dimensions, particularly in engineering, for female students. Additionally, no gender disparities were observed in self-efficacy in STEM areas. The results suggest that STEM inquiry-based learning activities are an effective approach to building students’ confidence in STEM fields and stimulating their interest in STEM careers. This study reinforces the importance of inquiry-based practices in promoting a more equitable STEM education landscape.

To assess the application of FCM in an online environment, an action research study combining asynchronous and synchronous classes was carried out with Portuguese secondary school students. The design of the lessons was based on the 5E Model: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. Data were collected using a questionnaire and students interactions in the synchronous activities. The results show that the asynchronous lessons stimulated students’ interest in the topic (Engage), and enabled them to gain an initial understanding of the topic (Explore) and to demonstrate the learning they had acquired (Explain). Synchronous lessons highlighted the active role of students in solving complex problems in groups and extending autonomous learning (Elaborate and Evaluate). However, in the process of extending their learning, students were found to rely more on immediate feedback from the teacher than from their peers. The results of the study confirm the suitability of FCM in an online environment, and its promotion of personalised learning and student autonomy.

The findings highlight that while teachers acknowledge the potential benefits, the actual utilization of these spaces is sporadic, especially at higher educational levels. Outdoor areas are predominantly used for physical activities, with limited interdisciplinary engagement due to various challenges, including curriculum extension. Addressing these challenges is crucial for enhancing STEAM education, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive teacher training to fully leverage the educational potential of outdoor spaces.

The concept of self-efficacy has emerged as a key area of interest in teacher education, due to its strong associations with teachers' performance and commitment to their profession. Consequently, there is a pressing need to cultivate the self-efficacy of pre-service teachers (PSTs). In recent years, there has been a notable increase in the popularity of the flipped classroom model (FMC) as an active learning model that has the potential to enhance students' self-efficacy when interacting with science content. The present study evaluates the impact of implementing an FCM approach on the PSTs' self-efficacy in science, specifically those enrolled in a general science course within the basic education programme. The study was conducted over a period of 14 weeks using a mixed methods approach. The quantitative dimension employed a semi-experimental design with a pretest-post-test control group and a semi-structured interview for qualitative data collection. The results demonstrated that the FCM had a statistically significant impact on enhancing the personal science teaching efficacy of the PSTs. The PSTs' mastery experiences during the learning process with the FCM facilitated the development of science-related knowledge and skills, the reduction or elimination of emotional barriers that might be perceived as inhibiting their performance, and provided vicarious experiences that inspired their future practice. The incorporation of the FCM into teacher education programmes confers a substantial advantage in the pedagogical training of future teachers.

The outdoor settings of schools present an advantageous context for STEAM education, allowing for a myriad of learning experiences. To understand how teachers perceive the pedagogical use of the school’s outdoor space, a study was carried out in a cluster of schools in a Portuguese city, including one middle school and 10 kindergarten and elementary schools. A mixed methods approach was used, combining a questionnaire for teachers (N = 49) with interviews (N = 8). The results indicate that teachers’ perceptions of the characteristics of their school’s outdoor spaces either facilitate or hinder the implementation of outdoor pedagogical activities. Most teachers concur that the outdoors provides contact with nature and encourages interdisciplinary and collaborative activities. However, the teachers surveyed admit to using the school’s outdoor spaces only occasionally, and this use decreases as the educational level at which they teach increases. The most common use of outdoor spaces is for physical and motor activities, promoting the well-being of children and youth. Although interdisciplinary activities in outdoor spaces are recognised, their implementation is limited and hampered by factors such as the length of curricula and the lack of training for teachers in these approaches. In this sense, there is an urgent need to train teachers in the interdisciplinary use of outdoor spaces to promote a solid education in STEAM subjects.

To achieve this goal, a course was developed in an in-service teacher education Master program to support teachers in developing learning scenarios for innovative learning environments (ILEs). The aims of the current study are to understand the impact of this course on teachers’ preparation to create learning scenarios appropriate for ILEs, and on teachers’ perspectives about the potential benefits and challenges of ILEs. Twelve in-service teachers enrolled in the Master program participated in the study. Data collection included teachers’ assignments, learning scenarios and a survey. Results showed that developing learning scenarios had a positive influence on teachers’ perspectives toward ILEs. Specifically, the participants revealed that they had developed skills to elaborate, implement and assess learning scenarios in ILE; and to reflect on the contribution of ILEs to teaching innovation, to curricular management and to teachers’ practices. Moreover, the course improved their awareness about the importance of interdisciplinarity and teacher collaboration. These findings suggest that the skills developed by the teachers during the course could be mobilized for their practice due to their willingness to innovate in their schools.

Data were collected from a sample of 190 twelfth grade students, consisting of 106 females and 84 males, using the STEM Career Interest Survey. The results showed that interest in careers in engineering tended to be lower than interest in mathematics, science, and technology among secondary school students. The study also found a gender gap in students' interest in science, engineering, and technology careers. Female students were less interested in engineering and technology-related careers than their male counterparts, but more interested in science-related careers. These findings can inform education policy makers, curriculum developers, teachers, and researchers about the importance of STEM education in nurturing and cultivating students' interest in STEM fields.

We also investigated the type of laboratory activity that teachers do in their classrooms and the difficulties they faced throughout the professional development program. To achieve these goals we applied a methodological approach based on qualitative research with interpretive orientation. Ten teachers participated in this study from seven different schools located around the area of Santarém. Different instruments were used to collect data: naturalistic observation, in-depth interviews and written documents. The results demonstrated the occurrence of changes in conceptions about teaching and learning science in different aspects: student and learning, teacher and teaching, science teaching, and teaching context. During the program, the teachers pointed out several difficulties about planning and implementing laboratory activities. Overall, the results suggest that most of the teachers managed to overcome them. The classroom observations showed evidence that teachers were increasingly giving more autonomy to students. However, one year after the training, laboratory work continues to be infrequent and closed, there have been little changes in the assessment of student learning and the use of collaborative work, and teachers do not feel confident to apply new teaching strategies to subjects that were not covered in the program. The results showed teachers’ entrenched traditional conceptions about the way students learn and about teaching science in primary school that are consistent with their practices. Some teachers may have assimilated the new ideas without changing their fundamental views about teaching and learning science in primary education. Also noteworthy, other factors prevent teachers to put into practice their ideas, such as teachers' knowledge, resources, students and curricular management.

conceptions that teachers of Physics and Chemistry have about learning assessment and how teachers incorporate assessment in their teaching practices. The aims are to understand teachers' practices by confronting their speeches with their practices and the articulation between teaching practices and assessment practices, taking into account the recent change in school programs. Three case
studies of teachers with less than three years of service were carried out. Data was collected from semi-structured interviews, observations of lessons and documents supplied by the participants. This study’s findings indicate two conceptions of assessment: assessment of learning and assessment for learning. One of the participants shows a conception of assessment of learning, valuing a
summative viewpoint of assessment. The other teachers revealed a conception of assessment for learning emphasizing a formative perspective of assessment, that as the role of regularizing and promoting improvement of learning. Relatively to the teachers’ practices, it seems clear that the assessment criteria are implicit, the feedback is sporadic and the students have a reduced role in the
assessment process. All of the teachers demonstrate difficulties in assessment of attitudinal and procedural competences. Only one of the participants elaborates observation with registration to assess these competences. The tests constitute the main assessment instrument in the teachers' lessons, what is coherent with a teaching
and learning conception that still remains traditional.
The results of this study appear to point out the need of
teachers’ training in the field of assessment. Initial and continuous training, as well as the work in collaboration among teachers seems crucial for change and improvement in teachers' practices.

whereby pre- and post-test measures were administered to a cohort of 190 Portuguese secondary school students, using the STEM Career Interest Survey. This study reinforces the importance of inquiry-based practices in promoting a more equitable STEM education landscape.
alternative to the hybrid FCM. To assess the application of FCM in an online environment, an
action research study combining asynchronous and synchronous classes was carried out with
Portuguese secondary school students. The design of the lessons was based on the 5E Model:
Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. Data were collected using a questionnaire
and students interactions in the synchronous activities. The results show that the asynchronous
lessons stimulated students’ interest in the topic (Engage), and enabled them to gain an initial
understanding of the topic (Explore) and to demonstrate the learning they had acquired (Explain).
Synchronous lessons highlighted the active role of students in solving complex problems in groups
and extending autonomous learning (Elaborate and Evaluate). However, in the process of extending
their learning, students were found to rely more on immediate feedback from the teacher than
from their peers. The results of the study confirm the suitability of FCM in an online environment,
and its promotion of personalised learning and student autonomy.
for teachers (N = 49) with interviews (N = 8). The most common use of outdoor spaces is for physical and motor
activities, promoting the well-being of children and youth. Although interdisciplinary activities in outdoor spaces are recognised, their implementation is limited and hampered by factors such as the length of curricula and the lack of training for teachers in these approaches. In this sense, there is an urgent need to train teachers in the interdisciplinary use of outdoor spaces to promote a solid education in STEAM subjects.
developing learning scenarios for innovative learning environments (ILEs). The aims of the current study are to understand the impact of this course on teachers’ preparation to create learning scenarios appropriate for ILEs, and on teachers’ perspectives about the potential benefits and challenges
of ILEs. Twelve in-service teachers enrolled in the Master program participated in the study. Data collection included teachers’ assignments, learning scenarios and a survey. Results showed that developing learning scenarios had a positive influence on teachers’ perspectives toward
ILEs. Specifically, the participants revealed that they had developed skills to elaborate, implement and assess learning scenarios in ILE; and to reflect on the contribution of ILEs to teaching innovation, to curricular management and to teachers’ practices. Moreover, the course improved their awareness about the importance of interdisciplinarity and teacher
collaboration. These findings suggest that the skills developed by the teachers during the course could be mobilized for their practice due to their willingness to innovate in their schools.

Contudo, a operacionalização desta abordagem integradora
Neste
Changes in society arising from the advancement of digital technologies require the development of new skills in citizens that allow them to be critical, creative and flexible. Project-based learning, involving programming and robotic activities, enables students to develop 21st century competencies and simultaneously engages their interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas. Thus, it is urgent to prepare teachers to integrate these technologies in the classroom, especially through interdisciplinary projects. This paper presents the impact of an interdisciplinary approach, using robotics, on the attitudes of future educators and teachers towards STEM. The project was developed over a semester with students in a teacher education program and emerged from the collaboration of the teachers of two courses in the fields of Mathematics and Physical and Chemical Sciences. In this mixed study we used a questionnaire of STEM attitudes, classes’ observation and a focus group interview, in order to ascertain changes on future educators’ and teachers’ perspectives. The results indicated that the interdisciplinary project methodology to promote learning in mathematics and science had a positive impact on students' attitudes toward STEM, especially regarding the integration of robotics.
The CreativeLab_Sci&Math is based on the following principles: Use of the 6E instructional model and Inquiry-Based Learning; Promotion of interdisciplinary activities in Mathematics and Sciences; use of innovative educational environments; Curricular integration of digital technologies.
do ensino básico” (Jesus, Vasconcelos & Lima, 2016, p. 3).
a literacia digital e o pensamento computacional, consideradas hoje competências
essenciais (DGE, 2016; Partnership for 21st Century Learning, 2007). A elaboração dessa
de resposta aberta e fechada, organizado em três secções: 1) caracterização do inquirido;
2.º e 3.º Ciclos do Ensino Básico e do Ensino Secundário. O objetivo é dar a conhecer as
