Antoni Ludwiczak to develop civic education and after- and non-formal educational work in local environments, done by him for four decades of the first half of the 20th century, and his extraordinary – although a bit forgotten today – role in shaping independent Polish adult education in the first years after regaining independence in 1918. The article pays special attention to that educator connected with the Catholic Church and Folk Reading Rooms Society (Pol.: Towarzystwo Czytelni Ludowych) in terms of propagating in the Polish territory the Scandinavian idea and concept of work of boarding folk high schools, and to the successful attempt of its adaptation and implementation in Wielkopolska (Polish) rural communities (Dalki n. The author devotes a significant amount of attention to the formation in the group consciousness of an image of the facility created there as a place of social importance, symbolic of the processes of emancipation of the Polish rural environment and a grassroots formation of an independent adult education in the XX century. The outline is at the same time a voice in the current discussion – on the future of the building housing the former folk university in Gacka Góra, a voice calling for renewed use of this place – symbol for the development of culture and education.

The author presents the endeavours of the members of People’s Libraries Society and its president – priest Antoni Ludwiczak – connected with the formation of the Great-Polish folk university. The process started already before World War I and was successfully completed in the autumn of 1921 when this educational institution began to function in Dalki in the vicinity of Gniezno. The final part of this paper is an attempt to answer two questions – the first one concerning the true significance of the high school in Dalki in the history of the Polish education of the adults in the 20th century; the second question refers to some doubts that may appear after the institution in Dalki was granted the title of the first Polish folk university.

Intercultural education, the main research area of this work is not a new concept in educational studies. However, the domination of the discourse focused on multiculturalism, ethnicity and problems with immigrants' integration is criticised (Žižek, 2007; Bourdieu, 2001) as being a substitute for real problems, such as burdening democratic societies with costs of training employees for corporations. The notion of social change, previously regarded as one of the essential functions of education, is gradually being replaced by the socialisation to the capricious needs of the market economy.
We do not ignore the perspective, that education nowadays might only be a preparation to the precarity of the labour market and that conflicts of interests are too often reduced to cultural problems. However, it would be hard to ignore the increasing migration all over the world. Living in the “age of migration” (Castles and Miller, 2003), we face significant demographic changes in our societies. Educational institutions handle with
more and more students with different cultural backgrounds and our assumption is, that there is a need of coexisting peacefully at school and in the society with respect to each other's rights. Thus, talking about culture is not a political manipulation, it is the daily and widely experienced cultural shock - caused both by
meeting the others and coming back to the previously known culture - that makes it more difficult to see other social strata.
