Andrea Vitali is a Doctor in Education Sciences (Free University of Bolzano - FUB - 2015) with a dissertation on the Italian-speaking education system in South Tyrol during the Nazi occupation. He has been a qualified teacher of Italian in German-speaking high-schools in South Tyrol since 1998. He obtained a Diploma in Pastoral Family Ministry School at the Pontifical “John Paul II” Institute at the Pontificia Università Lateranense in Rome (2014) with a written dissertation on the Nazis' victim Joseph Mayr Nusser. In the period 2010-2011 he worked as a scientific collaborator at the Bersntoler Kulturinstitut (BKI) in Palù del Fersina (TN) in a project on the local German toponymy. In the same time he was also acting as a field researcher in a project of the Documentation and Research Centre of South Tyrol’s Educational History at the Faculty of Education in Bressanone (Italy). After having taught Italian literature at the University of Bolzano, he now attends a doctoral school in Marriage and Family sciences at the Pontifical Theological Institute "John Paul II" in Rome. His interests range from Italian and German literature to sacred art, from history and theology to cultures and languages of South Tyrol, Tyrol and Trentino. The reference framework for his research projects is based on education stories and personal narrations about experiences within the Italian-speaking South Tyrolean educational environment and on the school history of minority peoples in the old tyrolean region. His studies mainly move from a microhistorical approach to the regional historical topics. Phone: 0472 846059 Address: Via Nissl-Weg 10, I-39042 Bressanone/Brixen (BZ)

In the period between 1830 and 1835, in fact, in Trento the two Tyrolean priests had the opportunity to enter into an exciting spiritual, formative, and human fellowship that marked their lives and works and the history of the Church in Trentino in the first half of the nineteenth century, especially in relation to Habsburg State authorities.

" It attempts to answer the question by using a Robert Musil's short story as a literary example of microhistory about an ethnic minority in Trentino at the beginning of the 20 th century. In 1921 the famous Austrian writer (1880-1942) revises observations he had made in the Fersina Valley during the First World War and publishes Grigia, a short story set in this unknown valley of Trentino, an alpine region in the Northern Italy (at that time part of the Habsburg Monarchy), where the ancient German population of Mócheni has been living since the Middle Ages. Through the point of view of the Austrian author we are able to get, between ethnography and literature, " microhistorical " pictures of a minority people whose historical status was completely ignored or denied in the past. With the assistance of Musil's work the text suggests that also cultural and social marginal subjects and events can get a historical " dignity " valuable in itself.
