Nastich (history and numismatics of Islamic Asia) deals with four cash coin samples of the Western Liao dynasty (xu-xing yuan-bao), unearthed in the area that once belonged to the Qara-Khitay state, representing two denominations (a single and a double value), and displaying three different calligraphic varieties of the Chinese legends.
The dual (Chinese and Inner Asian) nature of the Qara Khitay Empire (Western Liao dynasty) is a well-known and thoroughly investigated fact. The cited duality was evident in all aspects of life of the Qara Khitay society ― political, economical, social, cultural, etc. No exception in this regard is the numismatic aspect as well, although the very existence of intrinsic Qara Khitay coinage has been disputable until recently.

Upon thorough research, the authors managed to state that the dirham under review had been struck in AH 181/797–98 AD in the name of Umm Ja‛far (Zubayda), a prominent wife of caliph Harun al-Rashid. The mint name allows several readings, two of which looking plausible, but only one of them, al-Luwayya has proven trustworthy. According to Yaqut, al-Luwayya was situated near Bustan Ibn ‛Amir, a vicinity in some 24 miles north of Mecca on the pilgrim road from al-Kufa.

Starting with a single silver dang dated 769 AH, the present-day assortment of available coins struck in the name of Uljaytimur (otherwise Uljay Timur, Ulja-Timur, etc.) numbers to several dozens of pieces, both in silver and copper, exhibiting the dates of issue from 768 AH (copper pul of Saray al-Djadid, the capital) to Rabi‛ al-Awwal 770 AH (a unique dang struck at Saraychuq near the Caspian Sea; year 770 being somewhat dubious) and thus covering the most plausible time range of that khan’s rule during the renowned “Great Disturbance” in the Ulus of Djochi (Juji), namely the period between summer of 1367 and the end of 1368 AD.
