The favourable reception of these Old Icelandic “short stories” proves that þættir have been an interesting reading not only for literary scholars and historians, but also for a wider audience: such a reception, whether in the original, historical context, or in isolation from it, activates an entire web of diverse meanings and connotations that depend on the cultural horizon of the reader. The diversity and originality of þættir, tied to the multitude of their themes and characters, does not mean that they have to be studied within a tight genre-related frame, as they can engage into a dialogue with the recipients of the narrative, allowing them to discover potentially new meanings. The main objective of this book is to analyze the poetics of chosen Old Norse þættir from the perspective of literary communication. The object of my research is the corpus of selected texts from the thirteenth-century manuscript GKS 1009 fol, known as the Morkinskinna.

I focus on the interesting issue of how the author depicts the dying of archbishops whom he respects for their accomplishments and attitude, and those who, in his opinion, do not deserve the honour of serving the Church. In my work I also refer to ritual death, the pagan custom of making human sacrifices. The art of dying which can be distinguished in Adam’s Gesta reveals the medieval chronicler’s wide range of experiences and ideas.
