Bringing together a wide range of methodologies, it includes essays from manifold disciplines of the humanities such as philosophy, literary and art criticism, media and television studies, game studies, sociology and anthropology. The authors focus on both metaphorical and material meanings of the face. They grapple with crucial questions about modernity, modern and postmodern subjectivity, as well as with origins of certain linguistic terms and popular, colloquial phrases based on the concept of the face.

Posągi i utopie. Rzeźba jako metafora nowoczesnej formy artystycznej, podmiotowości i politycznej... more Posągi i utopie. Rzeźba jako metafora nowoczesnej formy artystycznej, podmiotowości i politycznej wspólnoty to opowieść o literaturze europejskiego modernizmu poprzez interpretację obecnych w niej rzeźbiarskich metafor, służących konceptualizacji problemów istotnych dla jej twórców: formy artystycznej, podmiotowości i wspólnoty. Rzeźbiarska materialność posągów i ich właściwości wywołują wiele możliwych skojarzeń - od stałości i zamknięcia materii w harmonijnym kształcie klasycystycznego artefaktu po ulotność i kruchość form Alberta Giacomettiego. Nowoczesna literatura rejestruje to zróżnicowanie i szuka w nim utopijnych projektów estetycznych, antropologicznych i politycznych, ocalających przed chaosem modernizującego się świata. // Statues and utopias are the central figures in this book. They allow to emerge the main thesis that in modern literature sculpture can be seen as an "internal code" of an artwork, tracing crucial issues of artistic and intellectual modernity, such as transformations of an ideal form, status and shape of the subject, and various constructions of political community. In Polish comparative studies the relation between sculpture and literature has not gained enough attention. It appears occasionally in the context of ekphrastic writings, and representations of a concrete sculptural artworks, especially in twentieth-century poetry. Therefore, this book starts from a very different point - form the work of Hugo Ball, who claimed that the crisis of modern epoch appears as a collapse of all "pillars and supports". Pillars and supports have metaphorical meanings, they stand for certain, abstract values acclaimed by Western world. But they are also concrete, material entities, and as such, they embody the lost integrity and stability of the world. Material objects, closed and isolated from the flux of time, guarantee the harmony of reality. Thus, they can represent the experience of modernity only by negation - as a broken totality. Sculpture is exactly such type of enclosed materiality. It evokes mainly classic statue with a harmony of matter, form and idea, described by Lessing, Winckelmann and Hegel with a great impact on Schelling, and Parnassian poetry. But this image of sculpture as a figure of an ideal order, placed above chaotic materiality, is not the only one mentioned in this book. Because in parallel statue becomes a symbol of spectrality, of an odd zombie-like state of some additional life of a matter. Therefore, because of such ambiguity of meanings, sculpture, together with complex qualities of sculptural matter (hardness, durability, fragility etc.), is a very operating figure for presenting the heterogeneity of modernism. A statue can be both - a classic, utopian form which saves subjectivity from the collapsing world, and a fragile matter that reveals an illusion of utopian wholeness. Each chapter of the book is devoted to a different image of sculpture, but all of them are based on the fundamental assumption that sculptural artwork allow us to see in modern literature the dialectics of materiality and dematerialization. To describe full potential of this dialectics, I use a range of various sculptural realizations: from an Ancient, anthropomorphic statue, through vanguard, non-figurative sculpture, up to reconfiguration of sculptural form from late modernity. Each chapter has some interpretative and textual autonomy, but the whole composition shows something, what can be named after Jean-Luc Nancy as an “oscillation” of sculptural motives. Sculptures presented in literary texts help us to notice mutual distortions and configurations of both - the three-dimensional artwork and literary writing. In the whole book sculpture stands as a keystone for constructing and breaking modernist utopias of an ideal artistic form, coherent subjectivity, and monolithic community. It is a figure of transgression of binary opposition that structured Western cultural imagery: subject and object (anthropological utopia), art and nature (aesthetic utopia), aesthetics and politics (political utopia). Those transgressions are exemplified in different literary texts form European modernity. Therefore, in one book the reader can meet Parnassian poetry, Walter Pater’s imaginary portraits, Michel Leiris’s surreal novel "Aurora", Rilkean prose "Malte", Apollinaire’s ironic visions of monument, writings of Polish mid-war aestheticians, Heideggerian treatise on sculpture and space, and Tahar Ben Jelloun’s meditation on Giacometti’s statues - to mentioned only a few of the characters presented in the "Statues and utopias". Such a wide range of both, time and cultural contexts, cause a great risk of constant incompleteness. So the book cannot be read as an entire catalogue of sculptural motifs in European literature. It is rather an attempt of showing how sculptural representations can operate as a mode of reading and interpretation of the crucial problems in modern intellectual and artistic formation. By linking many references to various vocabularies - theoretical languages of literary studies, philosophical concepts for describing art, and historical assumptions from the field of art history, I would like to gain a twofold goal: first - to trace an evolution of modernist utopias of ideal artwork, subject and community, and second - to propose some kind of immanent poetics of modern literary texts, for which sculpture can be a central figure, as a metaphor gathering the most important dilemmas in modernity.

ze wstępu redaktorki, Kaśki Maniak:
„Słownik kultury” gromadzi słowa, intonacje, znaki interpunkcyjne (a w nich zwłaszcza znaki emocji) budujące zdania wypowiadane o kulturze i sztuce. Warunki stworzone w ramach „Słownika kultury” pomogły w usłyszeniu różnic, wyartykułowaniu napięć, istniejących rozdźwięków i współbrzmień wśród uczestników pola kultury i sztuki.

In Katarzyna Kobro’s and Władysław Strzemiński’s Composition of Space (1931) we can read that sculpture is a way of space organisation. The experience of sculpture is not (as in painting) based on looking or understanding, but on the feeling of spatiotemporal motion. Oscar Hansen also emphasised the role of psychophysical activity in contact with sculpture and went a step further than Kobro i Strzemiński experiencing the impact on the human body different sculpting materials. In William Morris’s Notes on Sculpture (1966-1969) sculpture exists only in subjective, corporal way of experience, away from consciousness and discursive association. All those theories and their artistic concretizations redefines the role of the viewer of artifact and extend the Classic concept of sculpture as an art close to the body. In a number of contemporary sculpture this is not the model’s body that is the most important. Rather they deals with viewer’s body which is increasingly drawn into artistic representation.

The author wonders how notions such as “spectre”, “crypt”, and “haunting” affect the perception of the condition of each reader, and what kind of reading pleasure they invite. Derrida’s vocabulary is supplemented here by the critical categories of Maurice Blanchot (e.g., his thinking about language – death), which allows us to look at the act of reading as a strategy for necrophiliac pleasure, which may offer another way of thinking about the experience of reading and writing, understood as confrontations with a spectral presence.

oddającej sprawiedliwość ofiarom katastrofy. „Sprawiedliwość” i „ofiary” to słowa o dobrze rozpoznanym i zdefiniowanym znaczeniu, bowiem winą za tragiczny w skutkach wyciek obarczony został amerykański koncern.

Aurora is the name of the the surrealist novel’s central female figure, who appears in the stories of all the different male characters. All of the men ‒ the narrator and subsequent characters ‒ are searching for a point of stabilisation of their own subjectivities, which are losing their integrity and cohesion. The phantasm of Aurora, a Medusa‑like woman, is the only entity that guarantees petrification, and therefore can stabilise subjectivity. Eroticism connected to sculptural forms and Aurora’s ability to be at once a petrifying Medusa and an animating force of nature shows the paradoxical condition of the language and the illusory nature of any male character’s hopes for constructing stable subjectivity.

Sculpture understood in the broad sense, as Serres proposes in Statues: The Second Book of Foundations, enables him to trace a whole array of concepts in western thought, and to make the statue itself a model of new cognition, extending beyond binary oppositions and open to unpredictability and a lack of continuity. For Serres a statue also offers the possibility to cross the boundaries of science and the humanities, and consequently to become, at the same time, both a critical and utopian figure.

The article shows literary and documentary presentations of the first years of building Nowa Huta... more The article shows literary and documentary presentations of the first years of building Nowa Huta in the context of the avant-garde gesture of blurring the traces of the past and attempting at establishing a completely new beginning. Another equally important goal is to show how Nowa Huta, a model city of socialist visions, was organized by the dialectic of materialization and dematerialization which governed both the rhetoric of architectural visions and descriptions of human – especially women’s – corporeality. The author combines idealized (and therefore immaterial) approach whose ideological senses are projected onto the architecture of a utopian city with the socialistic approach to the body as a precisely shaped form whose biological and generally material qualities are disciplined. The author describes a few attempts of bodily disobedience to the dictate of the form, exposing the gap between postulated construction plans and the reality of everyday life entangled in the materiality of architecture and the biological nature of the body.

Proponuje konstelacyjny model badania krytyki literackiej.
This article’s objective is to apply the astronomical metaphor of the constellation to the study of literary critique. Departing from Walter Benjamin’s concepts that have been instrumental to the status of the “constellation” as a concept, and using this metaphor to reflect upon the study of history through Adorno’s revisions that usher the constellation into aesthetic studies, as well as the constellational model of reading proposed by Renée R. Trilling, and historical methods for applying this metaphor to Polish critical studies, this essay attempts to introduce the constellation as a means for grasping literary critique without deferring to totalizing and monolithic classification systems. The article demonstrates that the “critical constellation” allows us to yield a certain autonomy for critical discourses by simultaneously revealing their relativity and their multidimensional entanglements with the conditions of the literary field (including the present moment of the scholar). The article proposes the constellation model for studying literary critique.

The claims regarding the rejection of a criticism based on suspicion, formulated by, among others, Rita Felski, accentuate the elite character of reading, the goal of which is the unveiling of the economico-political entan-glement of the text as a product of historical reality. The distrust towards the surface of the text and the illusion of aesthetic autonomy, central for cultural studies, raised the critical atti-tude to the rank of an activity that is revelatory and privileged. The opponents of an unmask-ing criticism underline its limitations—unmasking reveals the ultimate source of every cultural production, the logic of capitalism, the total character of which leaves no chance for change. In defense of change, and in the hope of restoring to literature a widespread interest, there appear tendencies which bring back the individual experience of reading, the basis of which is to be aesthetic pleasure, freed from the historical context and its determinants. In the article, examples of such tendencies will be pointed out, as also will be their consequences caused by the elevation and universalisation of non-professional reading. The rejection of the political task of criticism leads to the questioning of its anti-systemic potential; in turn, the apotheosis of suspicion paralyses the postulative dimension of criticism. For this reason, in the last part of the essay, I propose going beyond oppositional conceptualisations in the direction of a criti-cism that is situated and material, and whose model, in my rendering, is subordinated knowledge.

The dominant feature of the presentation is a reflection on the project of utopian communication , to which Gilman subordinated her literature and plans for the reform of domestic space. In the essay, I present the issues of language, voice, and status of women's speech, inscribing them into the framework of the communication utopia as an ideal of a rational society.

Statues and utopias are the central figures in this book.
