All educators and historians of education can still learn from Shields's many contributions. His last major and summative work, Philosophy of Education, is an excellent onramp to his thought. They are presented here, complete, in a newly edited and uniquely glossed version that will help readers to negotiate Penn's obsolete usages and vocabulary. Biblical references are now identified and Latin phrases translated. J. H. Powell evaluated the book this way in 1944: "“Few books of the seventeenth century afford more genuine pleasure than this one, for few open such a window into the writer’s soul. Its strength does not lie in its wisdom, for its insights are not exceptional. The maxims are the kind of thing a busy, successful man with no illusions about himself might say in looking back over his career. But they are said with such charm and such modest confidence, so ingratiatingly, so amiably, that Penn captures his readers in a conversational intimacy bridging the ages. The little volume is quiet and reposeful, strangely relaxed for one of Penn’s robust moods—a book of philosophical poise from a from a man usually discovered in the front ranks of civil strife.” His estimate is correct about the appeal of the book, but it perhaps falls short of its actual scope and wisdom. Penn remarks on the ultimates of human fulfillment as well as the petty hindrances that trouble people of all ages in every generation. This collection of short reflections can be a valuable companion for our souls especially in these days, encouraging and guiding us to mental, social, and spiritual health. Available in paperback or digital format. Paperback size is 5.25”x 8.”

Here in a revised edition is his account of the Catilinarian conspiracy of 63 BC, the crisis that "made" Cicero's career and almost destroyed the Roman Republic. It is one of the richest and most gripping pieces of ancient writing, portraying the corruption of Roman society and the desperate fight to preserve the Republic against the devious devices of Catiline, a disaffected member of the aristocracy who aimed to use terror, intrigue, and foreign alliances to overturn the entire Roman establishment. Brilliant speeches by Caesar and Cato; wonderfully pointed character delineation; a quick-moving plot; crisp language and sharp reflections -- all these engage and hold the reader. This work is a "must-read" for anyone interested in the history of Rome or in the development of the art of historical writing. Sallust was one of the first to write of the decline of Rome; he also gives here his own well-considered answer to what made Rome great. Mark has three major concerns: (1) Christological, the identity of Jesus; (2) theological, the God who establishes the kingdom; and (3) "mathetological," discipleship. This brief parable meets the third concern, characterizing action in the face of an abundant harvest, which symbolizes the realization of the kingdom proclaimed by Jesus. Disciples, who do not know how the seed grows, nonetheless know how to gather in the ripened grain. The stages in the growth of the seed itself parallel stages in development of the disciples' awareness of the action demanded.
