From a broad range of perspectives covering a number of disciplines, authors exemplify the approach based on Habsburg Galicia, its culture, literature, economy and also the historical memory
of the region stretched between Cracow and L’viv.
The volume proposes a new perspective on the interrelation between the social, political, cultural and economical inequalities in this pluricultural and multireligious region. Although as a part of the Habsburg Empire Galicia was not a “colonial space” in the classic sense, the postcolonial approach enables the historian’s gaze to focus on the relationships between cultures in an imperial setting, opening new perspectives for the study of continental empires in the 19th/20th centuries.

Using a range of approaches and forms of inspiration, these studies have identified these companies as the main agents in the globalisation process and, some have also argued – sometimes using a teleological method – in birth of capitalism itself, turning such companies into the forerunners of current multinationals and harbingers of present day economic developments. The book’s goal is to contribute to such debates through the use of a ‘Mediterranean standpoint’ also projecting into global spaces. The attention it pays to all practices, including breaking and avoidance of the law, players’ strategies, even within those aspects considered marginal and residual, conflicts, failures and opaque relationships between players and institutions, places this book within a Mediterranean world which was often described using the categories of delay and backwardness in the context of the triumphant, objective and impersonal economic categories. The hypothesis of the book is rather that such typically Mediterranean factors are central to globalisation processes and commercial developments in the modern world too. This is the book’s aim. The Mediterranean standpoint can reveal unseen and unexpected scenarios and act as an analytical tool for ocean-related events and comparisons between them.

Merchants and Trade Networks in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, 1550-1800 consists of four thematic blocs: theoretical considerations, the social composition of networks, connected spaces, networks between formal and informal exchange, as well as possible failures of ties. This edited volume features eleven contributions who deal with theoretical concepts such as social network analysis, globalization, social capital and trust. In addition, several chapters analyze the coexistence of mono-cultural and transnational networks, deal with network failure and shifting network geographies, and assess the impact of kinship for building up international networks between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. This work evaluates the use of specific network types for building up connections across the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Basin stretching out to Central Europe, the Northern Sea and the Pacific. This book is of interest to those who study history of economics and maritime economics, as well as historians and scholars from other disciplines working on maritime shipping, port studies, migration, foreign mercantile communities, trade policies and mercantilism.

The period between 1648 and 1815 saw an increase in regional disparities throughout the Habsburg Monarchy. While this was also fostered by the expansion of the Habsburg dominions at the turn of the 17 th to the 18 th century, the main causes derived from shifting economic activities from mining towards proto-industrial textile production. Both domestic market integration and connections to global markets contributed to this development. In contrast to both traditional and current narratives, this article stresses the multiple and complex division of labour between core, semiperipheral and peripheral areas in the Monarchy amidst growing regional disparities. Imperial policies that fostered transregional competition supported this process, while discriminatory measures as well as the shift of tax burdens towards peripheries caused a growing imbalance of regional development.

At the same time, an analysis is presented of the impact of the imperial experience on the process of forging national identities. Critically debating Fernand Braudel's thesis of the Mediterranean's "decay" it is demonstrated that merchants from the Duchies of Milan and Mantua formed a numerically small, but influential collective concerning trade history. Far behind of the prestigious and influential Genoese mercantile community, Lombardian traders lacked the classical corporative institutions, but could compensate this short-coming through integration into the imperial nation, which was represented by influential Milanese traders such as Paolo Greppi through years. In order to get access to Spain's colonial trade, Lombardian merchants recurred to well-tried strategies: Formal and direct participation through naturalisations and matriculation into the Merchant Guild of America traders was completed by informal networks which were used mainly by the company of the consul Greppi. From Cádiz the connection with Central Europe was sought, where colonial goods were sent to and from where manufactured commodities were bought exporting them as far as the colonies overseas. In sum the article demonstrates that a mercantile group that lacked direct access to maritime trade and acted in the shadow of the influential Genoese community played a significant role in intercontinental trade during the 18th century.
Lombardian merchants played an important role in long-distance trade between the Italian and the ... more Lombardian merchants played an important role in long-distance trade between the Italian and the Iberian Peninsulas since the Middle Ages, in contrast to widely held beliefs and historiographical neglect. The 18th century witnessed the intensification of this role. Instead of being worse off after Lombardy passed from Spanish sovereignty to being ruled from Vienna, the Lombardian mercantile community in Cadiz made use of the institutional framework offered by the imperial maritime policy of the Habsburgs, which compensated for a lack of their own commercial institutional framework. Making use of different social strategies, which combined kinship, cultural and transnational cooperation, Lombardian merchants skilfully connected Spanish America with Habsburg Central Europe through the Mediterranean, despite the fact that their degree of formal integration into the Spanish trading system was limited. This occurred in the episode of growth that followed the Bourbon reforms in Spain after the 1760s. Although their business networks reached a wide geographical area, Lombardian merchants also acted as intermediaries for the incorporation of the Triestinian traders into long-distance maritime trade networks, and therefore contributed to linking both ends of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

Beginning with the concept of “internal colonialism“, we follow the evolution of postcolonial theory from a basically economy-based concept into a poststructuralist cultural theory, presenting the development and uses of its central concepts, such as Orientalism or othering. Based on some examples, we also highlight its previous appropriation to Central Europe and the political implications it carries in this region.

It intends to address the topic 'working on the land' from two different angles: firstly, agricultural work as co-production of society and nature and, secondly, rural labour relations as elements of larger political and economic systems. Contributions to this conference will explore how these two perspectives complement each other, identify research desiderata and blind spots in the respective other, creatively develop bridges and contribute to the theoretical, methodological and empirical enrichment of the history of agrarian work and labour. The first angle highlights how agricultural work-growing cereals, tree-or garden-crops, raising cattle, working in woods and forestry or processing raw materials produced on the land-differs from other forms of work. It draws our attention to the differences of agriculture from other branches of the economy due to its natural embedment: the natural constraints on the choice of crops in specific regions, the biological growth processes of plants and animals, the seasonality of the labour process, the uncertainties of weather and the resulting output-related risks and the effects these features may have (had) on the material and immaterial traits of culture, such as settlement patterns, household composition, techniques and technology, perceptions of the environment, the possibilities to intensify the production process, the choice of contracts, social stratification and property rights. In order to grasp the co-production of society and nature, researchers might undertake in-depth case studies with a regional or local focus. The second angle from which the topic is being addressed emphasizes the variety of rural labour relations, looking rather at commonalities with other forms of labour relations, and, last but not least, at the wide range of combinations-by individuals and households-between agricultural and non-agricultural work. This includes family farming, service in husbandry, the various forms of free and unfree labour, forced labour and wage

In the first part of the study, which follows a quantitative approach, the structural characteristics of the Galician economy and their inducement by trade, money flows, migration and technology are traced. In contrast the second part, which follows a narrative and discursive orientation, uncovers not only the actors of these interactions, but also highlights the regulation of interregional competition by the state's institutions. In this context, discourses legitimizing or transforming socioeconomic spatial orders in connection with developmental paradigms are paid special attention. Three phases are distinguished, starting with the cameralist spatial economy (1772-1830), followed by the liberal, de-territorialized economic space (18...

The geopolitical expansion of the Habsburg Monarchy in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth ... more The geopolitical expansion of the Habsburg Monarchy in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries led to a reshuffling of its internal political composition. Imperial elites aimed at introducing a higher degree of centralization. Within this process of empire-building, cameralism played a fundamental role because it aimed at strengthening the Monarchy’s fiscal and military strength. Cameralism relied on a taxonomy that classified regions and its peoples according to their productive potential and social norms conducive for social and economic change. This laid the base for the construction of Habsburg Eastern Europe. The imperial elites endeavored to civilize the population of this region and transform socio-economic lifestyles. While up to the Josephinist reform period orientalizing classifications and descriptions were linked to a reformist aim, after 1790 they increasingly turned into essentialist ethnic stereotypes.

Despite its move to the periphery and relative decline in other areas, Sandomierz continued to be home to important health and educational institutions. The most important change that Christoph Augustynowicz describes here is that, while in earlier times these institutions had been largely in the domain of the religious communities, the states now engaged more strongly in improving and regulating health care and education. Overall, Augustynowicz’s study analyzes changes in society, culture, and the economy from the end of the eighteenth to the middle of the nineteenth centuries on a micro-level. By centering on the problem of frequent changes of rule and peripherization due to changes in political borders, the author sheds light on a specific feature of the modern political, social, and economic transformation in the Polish territories, but the question of the impact of changing borders on local and regional development may also be of wider interest.

Following Said’s original definition of orientalism discourses of the 18th-century political economy are reassessed by focusing on their perception of spatial hierarchies in Eastern Europe. This article reconsiders these discourses as an active factor in the struggle for power and a tool in the hands of the geopolitical interests of absolutist monarchs in Prussia, the Habsburg Monarchy, and Russia in the age of mercantilism, as demonstrated by the Partitions of Poland-Lithuania. By focusing on the Habsburg Monarchy between the Spanish War of Succession and the Congress of Vienna, it is demonstrated here that, territorial landlocked empires within Europe used a similar language as colonial maritime empires in order to justify their geopolitical expansion and territorial domination of Eastern Europe. In a second step, it is show...

The eighteenth century witnessed the intensification of this role. Making use of different social strategies, which combined kinship, cultural and transnational co-operation, Lombardian merchants skilfully connected Spanish America with Habsburg Central Europe through the Mediterranean, despite the fact that their degree of formal integration into the Spanish trading system was limited.

The papers focus commercial policy, mercantile and financial networks and local governance in the Holy Roman Empire and the Spanish Monarchy during the 17th and 18th centuries. Since the classic work of Eli Heckscher, published first in 1932, mercantilism has been regarded as an economic paradigm that, through a combination of economic protectionism and political centralisation, drove the formation of a domestic market and the modern, centralised and bureaucratised state in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. However, this coincidence does not mean that this conference is the result of an ephemeral and momentary interest. In fact, it is part of long research process in which many of the scholars present at the conference are protagonists. In particular, the stimuli resulting from Francisco Cebreiro's research have made it possible to highlight the close relationship between the growth of eighteenth-century Trieste and the trade of Maria Teresa's Talleri. A relationship that has also been neglected in the historical research which has dealt more specifically with Trieste. Furthermore, if the coin trade and the financiers involved in this trade are themes present in international historiography, in recent decades they have been, when compared to other research objects, partly neglected and have struggled to become relevant factors in the overall reconstructions of the mechanisms of functioning of global trade and state-based processes. The ambition of this workshop, therefore, is to be part of this process as a moment of debate, helping to highlight its importance in the panorama of historiographical debates.

Jahrhundert in Europa.

of the region stretched between Cracow and L’viv.
