In India, a growing number of young people are moving out of their parental homes to metropolitan cities either in pursuit of higher education or diversified employment opportunities. This physical, mental and financial detachment from parents results in increased autonomy and more opportunity for premarital companionship with the opposite sexes. On the other hand, despite its headlong rush into modernity, India still wrestles with the changing values related to the institution of marriage. This prospective design study uses data from a survey of young individuals from two megacities of India to study the perception and intentions regarding cohabitation, marriage, and family formation.

In this context, this study aims to investigate the association between gender inequality and growth outcomes in the form of gross domestic product (GDP hereafter) per-capita across 158 countries in the world during 2000-15. Our findings suggest that GII has a significant inverse correlation with GDP per-capita (r=-0.7886); While gender development index (GDI hereafter) shows a positive correlation with GDP per-capita (r=0.574). Results from the multivariate log-linear model show that country with a high level of gender inequality index (GII hereafter) is having significantly lower levels of GDP per-capita even after controlling for other covariates. This study evidentially suggests that the economic policy of the countries should prioritize autonomy, agency, and empowerment of women to improve their participation in the national economy. Unless countries reduc...

Furthermore, this study also analyses the association between prevalence of obstetric violence and socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents.DesignThe study was longitudinal in design with the first visit to women made at the time of first trimester. The second visit was made at the time of second trimester and the last visit was made after the delivery. However, we have continuously tracked women over phone to keep record of developments and adverse consequences.SettingsUrban and rural areas of UP, India.ParticipantsSample of 504 pregnant women was systematically selected from the Integrated Child Development Scheme Register of pregnant women.OutcomeWe aimed to assess the...

A national survey was conducted to collect data on hemoglobin, height, weight, and certain economic and biosocial factors of 72 660 nonpregnant and 5619 pregnant women. Nonpregnant women aged less than 25 years are most affected by anemia. Women's education and standard of living in the households have a vital role in reducing anemia. Urban and well-nourished women also suffer less from anemia. The severity of anemia is higher among pregnant than nonpregnant women. Efforts must be made to educate women and enhance their level of economic status so that the prevalence of anemia can be reduced substantially.
