Collections

PLOS Collections are important thematic issues or group projects of a variety of research outputs that need publishing and promotion. PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases collaborates with other PLOS journals to expose the research to thousands of relevant researchers and give their high profile projects the visibility they deserve.

NTD Gender and Equity Research

Gender and sex remain prominent factors affecting access to health care, despite much progress in gender equality in recent decades.

Enteric Infection and Dysfunction

There is increasing recognition of the role of the intestine as the critical site where the human host encounters pathogens, initiates the immune response, protects from pathogen invasion, controls nutrient and calorie absorption, and modulates hormonal response.

Starworms

The Starworms (STop Anthelminthic Resistant WORMS) project aims to strengthen the monitoring and surveillance of drug efficacy and anthelmintic resistance in soil-transmitted helminth control programs. This Special Collection captures different aspects on how to best monitor the efficacy of current anthelmintic drugs and the emergence of anthelmintic resistance.

NTD Modelling Consortium: Insights on data needs

As Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) programs move towards the 2020 goals, there is a need to strengthen data collection and evaluation for decision making. Mathematical modelling has an important role in evaluating current monitoring and evaluation data and discussing alternatives, as well as in evaluating whether additional data is needed to understand key epidemiological uncertainties.

DeWorm3

Soil-transmitted helminths infect an estimated 1.45 billion people globally. This collection highlights both the existing evidence and new methodological approaches informing potential intervention strategies and policy changes.

Vectors

PLOS NTDs has long been a home for vector research. With this collection, we aim to curate the cutting edge of vector research from the global NTDs community.

PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases: 10th Anniversary Collection

The articles in this collection reflect on significant lessons and successes in the field over the past decade since the journal launched.

Yellow Fever

Examining past research on a current outbreak

Good Clinical Practice

Experiences, lessons learnt and practical tools developed during clinical research on NTDs in Africa and Asia.

Combating NTDs: Lessons from India

In this collection PLOS Negelected Tropical Diseases highlights the contributions of Indian authors, labs, and institutions to the global fight against neglected tropical diseases.

Mycetoma

Mycetoma is a serious and debilitating condition that meets all of the criteria we ordinarily attribute to a neglected tropical disease (NTD).

Zika

The impact of zika, an arbovirus infection transmitted by several different species of Aedes mosquitoes, should be treated with the utmost seriousness as the impact could be devastating.

40 Years of the APOC Partnership

This collections looks at the impact that the African Program for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) has had over the last 40 years and how it has played a key role in reducing the rates of blindness caused by onchocerciasis.

TDR Reflects on 40 Years

Former and current staff of the Special Programme in Research and Training in Tropical Disease (TDR) provide their views on key challenges and lessons learned during the 40 year history.

Visceral Leishmaniasis and HIV Co-Infection

PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases has dedicated a special collection to VL-HIV co-infection including basic and molecular work, immunological and diagnostic studies, clinical studies, and public health aspects.

Blue Marble Health: the mismatch between national wealth and population health

"Blue marble health" is a recent concept that recognizes a paradoxical disease burden – particularly the burden of NTDs – among poor people living in G20 and other wealthier countries.

Tsetse Genome Biology Collection

This collection contains manuscripts that describe functional findings on various tsetse biology. In addition two manuscripts reflect on the unique historical aspects of sleeping sickness epidemics that have plagued sub-Sahara in the 20th century

PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases: Historical Profiles and Perspectives

To commemorate the Fifth Anniversary of the launch PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases a number of "Historical Profiles and Perspectives" articles were published, highlighting individual researchers or institutions that have contributed significantly to progress within the field.

Strongyloides

Highlighting this somewhat mysterious yet very important neglected tropical disease, its enormous potential global impact on human health, and the urgent need for basic and applied research.

PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases: Top Ten Research Article Collection

To commemorate the Fifth Anniversary of the launch of PLOS NTDs, we are releasing a collection of the most-viewed research articles from each of the five years that the journal has published

Poverty

The Council of Science Editors organized a Global Theme Issue on Poverty and Human Development on October 22, 2007. More than 200 science and health journals, including PLOS Medicine, PLOS Biology, and PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, participated by publishing new articles.

Rabies

In several PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases papers on rabies scientists describe the situation of canine rabies control in developing countries, as well as various recent advances in the development of vaccines and treatments that will contribute to the elimination of human deaths from rabies.

PLOS Pathogens & PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases Twinning Collection

PLOS Pathogens and PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases sent a collection of primary research articles on topics spanning these sister journals, including: proteomics, kinetoplastids, insect vectors, genomics, and transcriptomics within the context of the NTDs.

World Health Report 2012: No Health Without Research

This collection's theme is oriented around the fact that decisions on healthcare are still made without a solid grounding in research evidence, and an impetus is required for this state of affairs to change.

Sleeping Sickness

Key papers published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases on human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), more familiarly known as sleeping sickness.

Genetically Modified Insect

These articles describe the technical and applied aspects of GM insects. We have also included articles that are not strictly GM, but aim to modify the disease transmission traits of insects through the use of symbiotic microbes.

A Research Agenda for the Control and Elimination of Human Helminthiases

A three part series examining the emergence of eHealth – the use of electronic tools in delivering health care – and its benefits and challenges worldwide.

The Geopolitics of Neglected Tropical Diseases

To commemorate the Fifth Anniversary of the launch of PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, this collection focuses on geographic perspectives on the global burden of the neglected tropical diseases.
