From the design and execution of earth and planetary science missions to the evaluation of biomarkers that can identify a particular predisposition to cancer, the scientific community increasingly depends on multi-institutional collaboration as a key enabler of the discovery process. Science data systems, in turn, play a key role in enabling the data-driven collaborative investigations,. Several domain-specific, independent software solutions have been developed to manage large amounts of data, including grid computing platforms-specifically, data-grid software packages such as the Globus Toolkit, DSpace, and OODT (ObjectOriented Data Technology). In addition, several computationally focused software products are geared toward executing large numbers of jobs, including ...

Over the past decade, it has been our role, as EDRN's Informatics Center (IC), to develop a comprehensive information services infrastructure as well as a set of software tools and services to support this overall initiative. We have recently developed a novel application called the Laboratory Catalog and Archive Service (LabCAS) whose focus is to extend EDRN IC data management and processing capabilities to EDRN laboratories. By leveraging the same technologies used to manage and process NASA Earth and Planetary data sets, we offer EDRN researchers an effective way of managing their laboratory data. More specifically, LabCAS enables EDRN researchers to reliably archive their experimental data, to optionally share these data in a controlled manner with other researchers, and to gain insight into these data through highly configurable data analysis pipelines tailored to the broad range of biomarker related experiments. This particular collaboration leverages expertise from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Dartmouth Medical School, as well as builds upon existing cross-governmental collaboration between NASA and the NIH.
Efficient and secure collection and management of information is essential in any modern biomedic... more Efficient and secure collection and management of information is essential in any modern biomedical study. Data management and coordination of multisite studies is a complex process. It involves development of systems for data collection, data cleaning with quality assurance checks, and specimen tracking, as well as development of procedures for conducting the study, training clinical sites, and communicating with sites to answer study questions and resolve and track data inquiries and resolutions. We developed a secure web-based system that is designed to automate evaluation of eligibility criteria and data collection, track specimens, serve as a resource for study-specific information, facilitate communication across sites in multisite studies, track data queries and resolutions, and allow administrative management of studies. The system combines a common framework across studies that defines the internal structure for all the web pages, with a study-specific one that defines the content of each page via a relational database. This combination creates a flexible and efficient environment enabling several multisite studies to be simultaneously or consecutively implemented and managed in a timely manner. We describe the development process, the system and its evaluation, current status, lessons learned, and future development plans.

The Planetary Data System (PDS) faced this exact question. The solution was to use a metadata-based middleware framework developed by the Object Oriented Data Technology task at NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Using OODT, PDS provided - for the first time ever - data from all mission instruments through a single system immediately upon data delivery.

It was developed to both prescribe the metadata to be collected for the planetary science data archive and to design the PDS Catalog, a high level inventory of the data holdings in the archive.

We demonstrate that archival research like participant-observation can add constructively to our understanding of politics and, in some respects, is superior to participant-observation.

The editors identified chapter authors who demonstrate in their research-oriented essays how archival research influences and improves empirical political science research. They weave their scholarly contributions together with their practical experiences and "boots on the ground" advice to ease readers toward their first foray into the archives. Because archives were largely abandoned by political scientists in the 1950s, archivists' understanding of their collections and their archival practices is heavily influenced by the habits and methodological concerns of historians. The essays in this volume help archivists better understand the somewhat unique perspectives and habits political scientists bring to archival collections. This volume challenges archivists to think "outside the ...

Conventional MOS and BJT parameter extraction practices are too time-consuming to be a realistic option for the construction of the required statistical SPICE parameter database. In this work, accurate relationships are derived between E-Test (WAT) parameters and SPICE-level parameters.

EEG was collected from 128 electrodes under resting eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions and during performance of a 13 minute sustained attention task. One EEG measure, the recrudescence rate, represented the number of changes in the location of the highest squared voltage per second. A second EEG measure consisted of the algorithmic complexity of changes in the location of the highest squared voltage over time. Regardless of the task condition, older adults had significantly higher scores than younger adults on both the recrudescence rate and the measure of algorithmic complexity. The implications of the results for neurologically-based theories of performance declines in older adults are discussed.
