Marlen Elliot Harrison has been teaching language, communication, composition, literature and gender/sexuality studies at international universities in Asia, Europe and North America since 1997. With 50+ international academic presentations – including TESOL, JALT, AAAL, ASA, AAA and CCCC – and 25+ international academic publications including Writing on the Edge (USA), Reflections on English Language Teaching (Singapore), CALL-EJ (Australia), and The Language Teacher (Japan) – Dr. Harrison was also the developer and co-editor of the first two critical anthologies on men and masculinities for the American Men’s Studies Association and regularly chairs a session on queer rhetoric and composition at American University’s (DC) Lavender Languages and Linguistics Conference.
The recipient of numerous research and educational grants and fellowships including a Best of JALT (2006) award, Dr. Harrison is currently teaching for the Language Centre at the University of Jyväskylä (JYU), Finland where he works with faculty in the Teaching Academic Content through English program and as a lecturer in research writing with international, multilingual students and researchers at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral levels. Prior to this, he taught writing and literature in the English department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), USA where he also completed his PhD in Composition and TESOL. Dr. Harrison also spent 4 years teaching English at Japanese universities as well as the Osaka International School and served as the co-coordinator for JALT’s Learner Development sig. With a background in mental health counseling (Psychiatric Institute of Washington, DC; North Baltimore Center; Johns Hopkins Hospital) and an MA in Education and Human Development/Counseling from The George Washington University, he is an inter-disciplinary instructor-researcher who works at the crossroads of humanities and social sciences to explore how both spoken and written language are shaped by culture and identity (and vice versa).
