Similar orientation can be found in the dialogical notion of language in the works of Voloshinov and Bakhtin. Their view, which opposes the Saussurean decontextualism and abstractivism, sees the focus of language studies to be on the concrete events of language use. Accordingly, the view necessitates that the multimodality of these utterances be taken into consideration. Starting from sociocultural and dialogical assumptions, but also drawing on other arguments that have been presented in other paradigms and frameworks (e.g.conversation analysis, systemic-functional approaches), increasing attention is given to multimodality that is present in human interaction. Are beliefs, then, different in verbally articulated and visually represented data? In this paper, we will present our findings, relate them to our theoretical app...

Using both multifaceted Rasch analyses and qualitative data from rater comments and interviews, the ratings obtained by using a CEFR-based writing scale and the Finnish National Core Curriculum scale for L2 writing were examined to validate the rating process used in the study of the linguistic basis of the CEFR in L2 Finnish and English. More specifically, we explored the quality of the ratings and the rating scales across different tasks and across the two languages. As the task is an integral part of the data-gathering procedure, the relationship of task peformance across the scales and languages was also examined. We believe the kinds of analyses reported here are also relevant to other SLA studies that use rating scales in their data-gathering process.

In this chapter, a neo-Vygotskian sociocultural approach to mind has been adopted for the study of beliefs about language learning. While the construction of knowledge and development of self-regulation have been studied within this type of sociocultural framework, learner beliefs about second or foreign language learning have not been studies at all. In the following, the notions of mediation and appropriation are applied to the study of metacognition in order to construct a theoretical and analytical framework suitable for the study of how learner beliefs come about.
