This study deals with the learner beliefs of Finnish Sign Language (FinSL) signers who study FinSL at the university. The data for this study consists of student interviews and essays collected in connection with an English course at the Language Centre. The students were interviewed to form a picture of their linguistic background and their views on learning English as well as other languages in a multicultural, multimodal environment. In this study, we focus on discussing how the linguistic background and learner beliefs of FinSL signers form a basis of an exploration of features affecting their learning of English and other foreign languages. Based on the socio-cultural framework, the learner beliefs these students have formed have been examined in order to better understand what kind of elements are included in their linguistic identity. As future language professionals, language(s) and linguistics are a part of their everyday lives. However, also their diverse linguistic background as minority language users in Finland, and their active involvement in transnational signing communities has an effect on how they approach learning English.

Affinity for technology interaction (ATI) scale measures the tendency of a person to actively engage or to avoid interaction with technological systems, including both software and physical devices. This research presents a psychometric analysis of a Finnish version of the ATI scale. The data consisted of 796 responses of students in a Finnish university. The data were analyzed utilizing factor analysis and both nonparametric and parametric item response theory. The Finnish version of the ATI scale proved to be essentially unidimensional, showing high reliability estimates, and forming a strong Mokken scale. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that men had a slightly higher affinity for technology than women when controlling for age and field of study; however the effect size was small.
