On 16 March 2023, Jeroen Reyniers delivered a lecture on relics in the basilica of Tongres (Tongeren). Among the many attendees was a citizen named Christiaan Doucet. After the lecture, he proudly presented the speaker a fragment of the basilica’s famous statue of Our Lady. The medieval Mary statue is rare and indispensable. Since 2017, it has been protected as an important piece of cultural heritage and is included in the list of Flemish masterpieces (Vlaamse Topstukkenlijst). Christiaan did not damage the statue, but received the piece from his mother years ago. It came into her possession in 1946 when the medieval sculpture fell to the ground. Fragments of the statue’s forehead were up for grabs at the time. Christiaan’s mother took a piece home, and then it has developed its own significance. Since 1946, the fragment has been considered as a relic and Christiaan always carries the piece of wood with him in his wallet. As a result of this event, Christiaan was interviewed about his personal treasure.
The conversation brought to light that Christiaan attends the seven-yearly Coronation Festivities (Kroningsfeesten) in Tongres each time and views the large medieval statue in the Basilica on a weekly basis. He is curious whether his object is indeed from the statue, but he ultimately decided not to investigate further. The process is costly and requires sacrificing a piece that he cannot retrieve afterwards, as it must be burned in the laboratory to obtain results. Nevertheless, Christiaan is convinced that the fragment in his wallet originates from the important statue. It also emerged that several other fragments from 1946 are still circulating in Tongres. Christiaan is considering to donate his treasure back to the Basilica of Tongres in the future. As a devout man, he spoke extensively about the emotional value of his fragment and the importance of Our Lady in his life.

This chair is considered the oldest piece of seating furniture in Belgium, dating back to around 1200. It is a relic because it is believed to have been used by Saint Lutgardis of Tongeren (1182-1246) when she was a nun at the St. Catherine’s Monastery in Sint-Truiden. The chair has survived many wars and difficult times in the Sint-Truiden area, leading it to end up in various places over the years. Today, the chair is primarily known as a fertility object. Frequently, (young) women with an unfulfilled desire to have children sit on it and ask Saint Lutgardis for help. The article provides an update on the research of this object, briefly touching on the chair’s history and the tradition of longing for parenthood. A bibliography is included, summarizing previous research and the chair’s recognition through various channels.

In 2014, a skull relic was discovered in a side altar in St. Pantaleon’s Church in Kerniel. A description, sewn to the textile, indicates that it is a skull from the cult of Saint Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgins.
The relic casing is very similar to that of the skull relic in the nearby St.
Odulphus' Church in Borgloon. The relationship can be demonstrated
not only visually but also by radiocarbon dating. The white linen around
both skulls dates from the same period, somewhere between 1480 and
1670 AD. The white linen, the red damask and the red silk velvet were
apparently applied around both skulls during the same period. However,
the silk velvet for the skull in Kerniel is younger: 1680-1930 AD.
Furthermore, analysis of the dyes indicates the use of Mexican cochineal.
It is not inconceivable that the silk velvet of the skull in Kerniel became
worn or damaged over the centuries and was replaced. The 14C-analysis
of the skulls does not indicate a dating typical for relics of Saint Ursula
and the Eleven Thousand Virgins. The dating of the textile is also
different from the skull relics previously examined at the Royal Institute
for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Brussels.
This begs the question of whether the skull was perhaps not attributed
to the Eleven Thousand Virgins at the time of its arrival in Kerniel. And
whether an explanation for the unusual dating should not rather be
sought in the history of Borgloon. The city and its church were besieged
and looted several times over the centuries, which could imply the loss
of relics. An emergency search for (skull) relics in order to be able to
continue a cult could explain the deviating datings of the skulls and
textile.

• What information can relics give us about the people buried in the shrines? Who were these people? What do we know about the way they lived? When did they live? What about diseases and other disabilities?
• What information can be retrieved from the objects kept with the relics and made of textile, wood, stone or metal. What was their purpose? Are they contemporaneous to the relic or are they older or younger additions? Why would they have been added? How should we preserve them?
Scientists of many different disciplines are involved in the study of relics and kindred artefacts, but till now there was no real forum for these people to exchange ideas and discuss methods. Therefore the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA, Brussels) is organizing a two day workshop on the scientific study of relics.
During this meeting we want to give analytical scientists, textile specialists, conservators, anthropologists, historical researchers, people involved in 3D-reconstruction as well as radiocarbon dating specialists a forum to exchange ideas about relics.
We fully realize that, since no such meeting has ever taken place, the organization of this symposium is a leap in the dark. We are however convinced of its necessity and cordially invite you to join us at the KIK-IRPA on 27-28 October 2016.
The registration fee is €75. This includes 2 lunches, coffee, tea and refreshments during the breaks and a copy of the summaries of the presentations.
Proposals for oral and poster presentations will be accepted until 15 June 2016. The program sessions will be chosen based on the submitted summaries.
A book with all summaries will be given to the participants, which will contain the contributions/ lectures/posters.
The conference will be held in English, each lecture will be a maximum of 20 minutes.
By the 15th of August we will publish a list of presentations.
For the online registration, payment and submission of the abstracts (max. 2 pages), please follow instructions on the website: http://org.kikirpa.be/relicsatthelab.

Lecture presented on the conference Medieval Mystical Theology in Dialogue with Contemporary Thought: Conference Programme (KU Leuven May 30-June 2)
