I teach and research in post-Kantian European philosophy, and I am interested a variety of topics at the intersection of philosophy and evolutionary biology. My historical work has focused mostly on biological theories of value and ethics, and on the import of biology for philosophy of religion. I also teach and research in environmental philosophy and environmental ethics. I have held teaching and research positions at a number of schools across the US and UK, including Stanford University, the University of Cambridge, Union College, and Kingston University.

Surprisingly, animal behavior science remains on the sidelines, despite producing critical evidence on which many arguments in animal ethics rest. In the present article, we explore the origins of the divide between animal behavior science and animal ethics before considering whether behavioral scientists should concern themselves with it. We finally envision tangible steps that could be taken to bridge the gap, encouraging scientists to be aware of, and to more actively engage with, an ethical revolution that is partly fueled by the evidence they generate.
This review explores Thomas Lessl’s “Demarcation as a classroom response to creationism: A critic... more This review explores Thomas Lessl’s “Demarcation as a classroom response to creationism: A critical examination of the National Academy of Science’s Science, Evolution, and Creationism (2008).” Lessl’s work examines philosophical debates about the relationship between science and religion from the perspective of communication dynamics between science teachers and audiences skeptical about evolution. His essay raises a number of important points that might help educators craft statements that are less likely to alienate religious students and to entrench any pre-existing opposition to evolutionary science. However, in this review, I raise a number of criticisms of Lessl’s account of the problems with the approach taken by the National Academy of Science. I argue that many of the criticisms of NAS’s approach to demarcation are not well-supported, and even were they to be strong criticisms, they do not justify skepticism toward evolution or science in general. This paper identifies and analyzes the problem of historicism in Charles Taylor’s work overall, b... more This paper identifies and analyzes the problem of historicism in Charles Taylor’s work overall, but with particular emphasis on A Secular Age. I circumscribe the problem of historicism through reference to the 19th-century German philosophical tradition in which it developed, in particular in the thought of Wilhelm Dilthey. I then trace the structural similarities between the theories of history to be found in the thought of Taylor and Dilthey and how these structural similarities raise worries associated with the problem of historicism. I argue that the structural aporia of historicism evident in Taylor’s work brings to light a live philosophical problem that is basic to theoretical debates in the study of religion.
