Joaquín Medina Warmburg (born 1970 in Cádiz, raised in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) is a full professor for history of architecture at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, Germany) and co-director of saai - Archive for Architecture and Civil Engineering. Trained as an architect at ETSA Sevilla (Spain) and RWTH Aachen (Germany), where he earned his Ph.D., he has taught in several European and American universities since 1997, such as Universidad de Navarra (Master en Teoría y Diseño Arquitectónico), Universidad de Buenos Aires, or Princeton University (SOA, Program in Latin American Studies). 2011 to 2015 he was in charge of the Walter Gropius Chair of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires. He has conducted his research activity in the field of the history of architecture and urban planning of modernism. His approach focuses on the phenomena of cultural internationalization, including technical and environmental issues related to these exchange processes. In his current research projects, he addresses both a connected and an environmental history of architecture. He has published extensively on these topics, including books such as "Projizierte Moderne" (Frankfurt 2005) and "The Construction of Climate in Modern Architectural Culture, 1920-1980" (Madrid 2015, edited with Claudia Shmidt), "Walter Gropius: proclamas de modernidad" (Barcelona 2018), "Paul Linder: de Weimar a Lima.

We identify it today with the rationality and functionality of modern homes conceived as 'machines for living in'. However, the machinist simile induces the error of considering modernity as an univocal desire to neutralise all environmental determinism and overcome biological imperatives. As the magazine Die Form (the official journal of the Deutscher Werkbund, the association that sponsored the Weißenhofsiedlung) shows, the housing units in Stuttgart were framed within a debate about the relationship between machine culture and nature that between 1922 and 1933 critically reappraised the dichotomy between the mechanical and the biological and posited modern architecture as the fullest expression of its essential unity.

In the face of this challenge, architecture – having primary responsibility for the degradation of the environment – can contribute the many valuable experiences built throughout the twentieth century. Based on this hypothesis, the articles included in this book set out to go through some of the cultural constructions regarding the relationship between architecture and climate in the context of modernity. Many of them are rooted in the climatological theories of Enlightenment, like those that consider cultural diversity as a consequence of climatic determinism, which was also believed to account for collective identities and desires. Even in those modern architectures particularly prone to empirical and objective arguments, it is easy to detect climate utopianism, its ideology and its symbolism. Today, when cultural conventions of comfort have acquired a universal value, the technical utopias of artificial climate control seem vainly illusory, posing questions about the convenience of their ubiquity and the search for strictly architectural solutions.

Thus, they are circumstantial discourses, developed from particular provisional points of view, chosen from a range of possibilities. Every generation has read on the past from the angle of the problems specific to its period. Since the Renaissance and into our days, architecture history has been at the service of a professional practice seeking legitimation. This course of action has become useless, and more so in a changing world like ours, where historians do not wish to judge the past nor impose irrefutable truths, but to question them. From these coordinates, this publication brings together the contributions of the III International Congress of the Asociación de historiadores de la Arquitectura y del Urbanismo (AhAU), devoted to the historiography of architecture.

In this conference, we will explore the cultural history of California, particularly its Viennese influences, through the example of the émigré architect Richard Neutra (1892–1970), who was crucial in the development of ‘Californian Modernity.’
The point of departure for this conference is Richard Neutra’s architectural practice, which found its ideal environment in Los Angeles. Neutra designed beautiful minimalistic houses that connected inside and outside and promoted the physical and mental health of their inhabitants. An international group of speakers will analyze the diverse and entangled sources of Neutra’s work and thought, including his interest in psychoanalysis and his concept of biorealism. We will discuss the links between the ideas of the 1920s avant-garde in Europe and the hippie avant-garde of the 1960s and 1970s in California. The conference thus aims to explore the global history of what might be called Californian Modernity—which continues to exert a profound influence on contemporary culture—and to deepen our understanding of the complex relationships between architecture and landscape, health and space, and of the cultural entanglements between Europe and the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The conference is the result of a collaboration between the IFK | University of Art and Design Linz, the Wien Museum, the Research Unit Art History at the Institute of Art, Building Archaeology and Restoration at TU Wien, and the Filmarchiv Austria.
