Although the scenes depicted in the painting and on the ostracon are not identical in every detail, the contents of each register suggest that the sketch in line-drawing could be prepared while the painting was planned, supposedly as one of its variants proposed by the artist. Among the similar artists’ sketches remained to us from the New Kingdom and especially from the Eighteenth Dynasty, those depicting not only smaller details but the whole composition are rather rare. This find can offer new aspects for our understanding of the work procedures of ancient Egyptian artists.

One of the sites of the Hungarian excavations in Egypt is the El-Khokha hillock in the Theban necropolis, where the most ancient decorated rock-cut tombs of the area can be found. On the southern slope of the hillock, 14 decorated tombs and further burial places in and around them have been excavated since 1995. In this work, the students and former students of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts have also been taking part since 2007. The tomb of Unis-ankh is the most ancient monument that we know of in the Theban necropolis, which was created towards the end of the Old Kingdom. The restoration of the monumental paintings was started soon after their exploration and in 2019, several of the painted fragments found during the excavation were fitted back in their original places. This paper summarizes this procedure and its results.
