The Hemmaberg is (with modern designation) a centre of worship, that has gained entry to the archaeological literature since the beginning of our century thanks to R. Egger's publication. Since that time a double church (with a baptistery) has been known (beginning of &''century). The resumption of excavations further resulted in an other church being the origin of the centre of worship (beginning of 5"' century) and another pair of churches - one of them including a baptismal font (beginning of'6'h century). The author exspect.s a differentiation of eucharistic, martyrological and baptismal functions that can be seen at both of the two double churches. Therefore he suggests there were two different Christian communities. Out of consideration for the dating (concurrently with the affiliation o/Noricum to the kingdom of Theodoric) it could have been a Catholic and an Arian (of course a Gothic) Christian community. Big preserved mosaic areas are exhibited in the local museum of Globasnitz and show a clear r...

The author presents the latest results from the excavation at the churches of St. Hema and St. Peter in Holz (Teumia). The site at St. Hema is seen as being of particular importance because of the discovery of the fourth and fifth churches. Finds have been interpreted as being aryan cult objects, dating from the Teoderic period. The second part of the article is devoted to a discussion of the problematic vvall paintings from the second period of the bishop's cathedral and about the inscription of a mosaic donor from the south chapel of the cemetery church at Teumia.Avtor predstavlja najnovejše rezultate izkopavanj na Sv. Hemi in Št. Petru v Lesu (Teumia).

Broad problems related to the veneration of relics in the early Christian period are discussed in this article, from the first excavation of the remains of martyrs to the worship of individual fragments of bodily remains. The value placed on relics in the early Christian period is shown with special attention to research in Carinthia and the Tyrol, as well as individual important examples in the broader Mediterranean region. The indigenous inhabitants took the remains of saints with them when they abandoned their settlements. On the basis of comparative analysis, the author establishes that the proper placement of relics was in graves, which were then marked with tables or mensae, thus representing miniature grave vaults. The presence of relics can be proven not merely in presbyteries, but also in chapels and apses. The relics and worship of martyrs were decisive for the creation of twin churches and special architectural spatial arrangements.Predstavljena je širša problematika čašč...

Arheološke raziskave zadnjih štiridesetih let so spremenile prvotno predstavo o obdobju preseljevanja ljudstev, pozne antike in zgodnjega krščanstva v Sloveniji, Italiji in Avstriji. The last forty years of archaeological research have changed the way we view the Migration Period, Late Antiquity and Early Christianity in Slovenia, Italy, and Austria. Excavations and the processing of finds are costly, yet the results have barely been presented in Austrian textbooks. In museums, available information is often scarce, and in textbooks it is sometimes reduced to clichés. In the future, public relation offices and educational services should be mor...

Even though the earliest prosthetic devices date to the Ancient Egyptian Empire and iconographic sources attest their use in the Greco-Roman world, archaeological evidence for this practice prior to 2nd millennium AD is very scant. In 2013, a skeleton dating to the Frankish period (6th century AD) was excavated at the Hemmaberg in southern Austria. The middle adult male was missing his left foot from above the ankle. In its place, an iron-ring and wooden remains were recovered and interpreted as a prosthesis replacing the lost foot. This represents one of the oldest examples of prosthetic limb replacement associated with the skeleton of its wearer in Europe to date. Analysis through macroscopic assessment, radiography and CT-scanning revealed healing of the lesion even though it may have initially been complicated by osteomyelitis. Atrophy of the left lower leg further indicates immobilisation and suggests survival of several years. Osteoarthritis in the knees and shoulder girdle provides tentative indications towards the functionality of the prosthesis, perhaps aided through a crutch. These findings are set against the historic, archaeological, bioarchaeological and social context of the man in order to discuss whether removal of the foot was due to medical, punitive or traumatic causes.
