As a matter of fact, the connections are manifold and more involuted than may first appear. Both are emblematic of ancient Egypt and are therefore more mythically and mystically charged than any other element of this civilization. At the same time, blatant misconceptions about them have come to be accepted as the communis opinio. One might assume that these beliefs emerged primarily as a result of Tutankhamun’s and the pyramid's currency in popular imagination and thus their frequent and varied reception in the public sphere. But the truth is, Egyptologists too have contributed unwittingly to transmission of faulty ideas. This article seeks to clear up a few of the most popular misconceptions about ancient Egypt, trace them back to their origins and explain why they are so problematic. I dedicate these lines heartily to the memory of my friend Ramadan, who through his great discoveries and enthusiasm, contributed greatly to the world’s knowledge about the heritage of the pharaohs and promoted the fascinating aspects of our field beyond popular misconceptions.

The main focus lies on the period of about 1 500 years, from the attestation of the earliest secured sources around 2500 BCE to the end of the New Kingdom, when the evidence for voyages on the Red Sea becomes scarce. The Graeco-Roman period, in which the organization of seafaring fundamentally changes as Egypt becomes a member of a more global trade network, falls beyond the scope of this contribution (see however the contributions of Reinard/Johann and Dross-Krüppe in this volume). After a brief historical overview (chap. 3), the individual source categories are presented, beginning with the harbors on the Red Sea coast with their well-preserved infrastructure and artifacts (chap. 4). Of particular interest among these finds are the ship parts, which are considered in more detail in the next chapter (5) together with further written and visual evidence. The methodological problems associated with analyzing pictorial representations are subsequently discussed. The final chapter (6) explains various aspects relating to the operation of an expedition on the Red Sea.

In addition to the development of a sophisticated hieroglyphic writing system, the country on the Nile is particularly famous for its monumental architecture, with the pyramids certainly being the best-known example. Less well-known is Egypt's role in the history of seafaring, although great achievements were made in this field as well. Especially the detailed representations of ships in relief scenes and paintings are often used by naval historians, sports historians, and researchers of other disciplines as sources to clarify various questions related to ancient Egyptian navigation.
Using the example of the rowing and paddling technique, this article intends to show how quickly one can fall into a fallacy if the rules of Egyptian visual language are not considered.

Using the example of the rowing and paddling technique, this article intends to show how quickly one can fall into a fallacy if the rules of Egyptian visual language are not considered.
