Dans l’immédiat après-guerre, la prise de conscience de la puissance annihilatrice des technologi... more Dans l’immédiat après-guerre, la prise de conscience de la puissance annihilatrice des technologies militaires amène une réflexion sur la possibilité d’une destruction totale du monde. L’imaginaire de la menace, alimentée par les images de l’explosion des bombes atomiques au Japon, se diffuse dans l’art des années 1950 et 1960 ainsi que dans la philosophie contemporaine. L’étude croise les propositions plastiques de Gustav Metzger et ses nombreux écrits sur ce qu’il appelle l’« Auto-Destructive Art », un principe paradoxal de la création artistique, avec les textes du philosophe Günther Anders sur le développement du nucléaire civil et militaire : L’Obsolescence de l’homme (t.I 1956, t. II 1980), Hiroshima est partout (1982) et Violence, oui ou non (1987). L’étude s’articule autour de plusieurs réflexions communes qui inaugurent une culture survivaliste. Elle envisage d’abord la nécessité de détruire les instruments de destruction, puis aborde la question de la désensibilisation du sujet moderne dans la société capitaliste et sa faible perception de la menace globale qui pèse sur l’humanité et s’ouvre enfin sur une perspective écologique. Leur trajectoire de pensée lie donc l’extermination à l’extinction et anticipe le courant de la collapsologie en situant la civilisation industrielle dans « le temps de la fin ».

La relation étroite et méconnue qu’entretiennent l’art et la médecine joue un rôle central dans l... more La relation étroite et méconnue qu’entretiennent l’art et la médecine joue un rôle central dans les manifestations les plus retentissantes des avant-gardes. Elle émerge d’un contexte historique particulièrement difficile et s’imbrique dans les expériences des deux conflits mondiaux, des totalitarismes, des génocides, et de la bombe atomique qui ont façonné un siècle pendant lequel s’est déployée une violence inédite. L’histoire pensée avant tout comme « l’histoire de la douleur du monde », comme le souligne Walter Benjamin, ne cesse d’enregistrer les processus de destruction. Elle appelle donc un autre récit qui lui serait le corollaire immédiat, enregistrerait et analyserait les efforts mis en œuvre pour apporter une réponse réparatrice et qui ferait des médecins, des philosophes et des artistes ayant fait face aux événements traumatiques ces principaux protagonistes.
Quelles sont les raisons qui amènent les artistes à s’intéresser aux protocoles médicaux ? Les artistes déployant des techniques médicales ont-ils nécessairement un lien intime avec la médecine ? Que savent-ils des protocoles de soin ? Quelles sont les sources médicales auxquelles ils se réfèrent ? Quelle est la finalité de la mise en œuvre des théories et des méthodes de la médecine en art ? La réalisation artistique a-t-elle quelque chose en commun avec le geste du soin ? Existe-t-il un lien particulier qui unit la vocation artistique à la vocation médicale ? La thèse répond à l’ensemble de ces interrogations.
Elle met ainsi en lumière le travail des artistes contemporains qui investissent le savoir médical, notamment dans les spécialités de la chirurgie réparatrice, de l’orthopédie, de la psychiatrie et de la psychanalyse. L’étude cerne la manière dont ils livrent des diagnostics critiques, s’approprient les instruments et les techniques opératoires, et proposent des thérapies alternatives pour faire face aux actes de destruction. De la mutilation corporelle à la blessure psychique, de la détresse individuelle au traumatisme collectif, de la technique artistique qui se meut en pratique médicale, l’analyse met en évidence le lien qui existe entre l’art et la médecine pour soigner les traumatismes de l’histoire récente. Tout en ouvrant une possibilité pour l’histoire de l’art d’intégrer les humanités médicales, ces travaux de thèse amènent à s’interroger sur la dimension éthique qu’endossent certaines tendances de l’art actuel, parfois au détriment de l’esthétique, et donc sur l’utilité sociale à laquelle elles aspirent.
