The purpose of the paper is twofold. First, to enhance the role played by al-Kawākibī in the development of the discourse on democracy and human rights in the Arab-Islamic world. Secondly, to give an interpretation of the Egyptian transition, in order to try to understand the obstacles to the implementation of a democratization process. First of all, the paper gives a short description of the political and social environment in which al-Kawākibī lived. Moreover, it focuses on al-Kawākibī’s biography, which is strictly related to the contents of his above-mentioned work, in order to prepare the ground for the following analysis. After that, the paper highlights some of the main passages of al-Kawākibī’s book, especially those related with democratization and human rights. To begin with, an analysis of the author’s opinion about the causes of despotism is carried out, with a special focus on the political, religious and social ones. Furthermore, this section shows the consequences of despotism as exposed by al-Kawākibī. Finally, the emphasis shifts to the remedies proposed by the author in order to leave behind an autocratic environment. The final section represents the core of the paper. First, a brief analysis of the main events that developed from January 2011 on – fall of Mubarak, SCAF government, election and fall of Morsi - is carried out. Then, these same events are examined on the base of al-Kawākibī’s work. In particular, a comparison between the causes of despotism such as conceived by the author and the Egyptian situation is carried out. Furthermore, this section tries to apply al-Kawākibī’s theory in order to analyze the performance of Morsi and the Islamist government, as well as the new intervention of the military in the Egyptian politics and the first times of al-Sisi presidency. Finally, the paper aims at using al-Kawākibī’s work in order to understand the possible elements that might allow Egypt to come out of the autocratic environment that has permeated politics and the society in the last decades.

After the participation in the country's parliamentary activity since the 1980s, the 2011 uprisings and the subsequent elections brought the organisation to power for the first time. Expectations of guiding Egypt towards a democratic transition, however, were not met, as the Brotherhood was accused of having betrayed the Revolution and, furthermore, of implementing an Islamic state where human rights were not guaranteed. However, the Muslim Brothers since years that their main objective consisted in guaranteeing human rights as prescribed by Islam, especially the Qur'an and the sunna. For this reason, the paper aims at analysing the theory about human rights elaborated by the main ideologues of the Muslim Brotherhood, in order to understand the principles later included in the 2012 Constitution. To this end, al-Bannà's Mudhakkirat are analysed, as well as the discourse made at the Fifth Congress of the Muslim Brotherhood in 1939. moreover, Sayyid Qutb ideology on human rights is examined, focusing in particular on its commentary of the Qur'an. As a result, the analysis hopes to contribute in giving a partial picture on the organisation's attitude towards human rights, with a double purpose. First, to offer another perspective on human rights; second, to provide the base for a better understanding of the Brotherhood's attitude on human rights during its brief ruling experience.

second, provide basic human rights education.
Therefore, the paper aims at depicting some theoretical elements on human rights education in critical situations. A
further purpose would be to underline the difficulties of developing a debate on human rights in contexts where there
is lack of education about them, as well as scarce protection.
Based on these premises, the paper will start with an analysis of the author’s practical working experience,
highlighting the most interesting situations that provided some elements on which to reflect. In this part, moreover, the
strategy used by the author’s team to develop the educational sessions will be described.
Consequently, some conclusions will be drawn from this practical experience, such as the children’s reactions to the
incentives provided by the educators and the results of the sessions, in particular the motivational ones.
The last section will be dedicated to the description of methods that can be used for enhancing the elements
underpinning the concept of human rights, such as human dignity and respect, to people living in an environment
where there are few guarantees, in order to develop from the bottom the awareness needed to start a debate that could

This paper tries to overcome the focus on Islam as the source of violence, focusing instead on lack of human rights protections as a key factor in enhancing extremism. In particular, the focus is put on Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's regime in Egypt, which is characterized by a high level of repression. Consequently, the first part analyzes the socio-political situation in Egypt, focusing on human rights issues. After that, the paper examines the literature on human rights-extremism links, both academic and institutional (United Nations). Finally, it discusses the possibility that the current climate of abuses and violations in Egypt could lead to a rise in radicalism and terrorist attacks.

During the last years, Egyptian politics has been characterized by a wide variety of events, from the Revolution to the fall of Mubarak, from the parliamentary elections won by the Islamists to the Morsi presidency and the return to power of the military. The transitional experience has been deemed unsuccessful by the new president al-Sisi, the revolutionaries themselves and, at the same time, by lots of scholars and experts. Most of these critics has converged towards one particular target: the Muslim Brotherhood. Indeed, the movement has been accused of having betrayed the Revolution, while after the military removal of president Morsi the organization has been labelled as terrorist and most of the responsibilities of political and economic mistakes have been laid on it. Specific accusations has also been directed to the Muslim Brotherhood management of human rights issues. The Constitution issued in December 2012 was deeply contested by the young revolutionaries, as it was said to include some provisions that reminded to the Mubarak era and, moreover, it contained some unclear references to religion that did not meet the aims of the Revolution. Furthermore, some bills presented by the government sparked protests from human rights and civil society organizations. On the base of these premises, therefore, some questions arise with respect to the Muslim Brotherhood's political thought on human rights, while at the same time other doubts emerge on the commitment of the organization in this specific field. As a consequence, the paper tries to put some light on this matter, analyzing the evolution of the political thought of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood with respect to human rights, as well as the practical activities carried out by the organization in this field. The period taken into account ranges from the beginning of the XXI century until the fall of Morsi, in order to understand the importance given to this specific topic by the organization, as well as the attempts – if there were – to put human rights in practice both before and after the Revolution. To begin with, the political, social and economic environment of the last decade of the Mubarak regime will be taken into consideration, in order to prepare the ground for the main analysis. Moreover, the framework of human rights in Egypt during the years 2000s will be examined, focusing on civil and political liberties but also on social and economic ones. After that, the theoretical approach of the Muslim Brotherhood on human rights will be analyzed, trying to comprehend the commitment to the international body of laws as well as the organization's interpretation of the fundamental rights. Furthermore, the paper will try to analyze if the Muslim Brotherhood carried out activities related to human rights, both in the political field and in the socioeconomic one. Finally, the attitude of the Muslim Brotherhood towards human rights during the brief period they had a parliamentary majority will be examined, as well as the presidential activity with respect to this theme until the deposition of Morsi. Therefore, positive and negative sides of the matter will be discussed, making also a comparison with the pre-revolution period. At the same time, an analysis of the possible obstacles, both internal and external to the movement, to the implementation of human rights measures will be carried out, in order to make the picture as more complete as possible.
