These include unequal access, limited interactivity, or insufficient learner background and skills. This article aims to understand how introducing online and offline connectivist elements influences MOOC learners’ engagement and motivation and self-perceived benefits from undertaking MOOCs. To do so, we present descriptive statistics and analyse results from focus groups of regionally and disciplinarily diverse learners of the Federica Web Learning – International Political Science Association (IPSA) MOOCs, who were introduced to connectivist elements in the IPSAMOOCs. We find that limited connectivist elements added to the IPSAMOOCs did not notably affect learner engagement and motivation. However, the IPSAMOOCs have considerable potential to impact engagement and motivation, if combined with offline activities. The findings contribute to studying the prospects of MOOCs as a potential avenue for accessible, global digital Political Science education, advancing the appreciation of democracy.

It results on low participation, once Brazilians do not perceive it as an effective mechanism to solve social problems. Thus, this paper aims to conduct a study on the crisis of political representation in Brazil, in an exploratory approach, based on the analysis of elements of the political culture and the patterns of participation in the country. To do so, we will use quantitative data from the Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) of 2012, 2014 and 2016, in order to observe the changes and continuities in the political culture and the participation of Brazilians, thus being able to understand how the crisis of political representation in the country has been taking shape.

Brazil and the United States have been for months the two countries with most cases and deaths by Covid-19 in the world, until India surpassed Brazil, and only on the number of cases. Therefore, there are similarities in the way their presidents have been dealing with the crisis. Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro have been in standout on international media by their poor leadership in face of the crises created by the pandemic. Both presidents have politicized the crisis, standing against scientific evidence and world recommendations. Contrary to social isolation, they have antagonized governors and mayors, intensifying conflicts despite the lost lives, disqualifying the media as fake news. Given that, this paper aims to analyse how the populist leaders, in Brazil and in the United States, have responded to the coronavirus crisis in terms of actions and discourses. Thus, we seek to identify the characteristics of the political culture of youngsters in Southern Brazil. For that purpose, we analyzed different factors such as the type of school attended (public or private), quality of education and average family income. Our hypothesis is that young people have been increasingly linking democracy to subjective and post-material aspects, with different emphasis depending on their socialization. The data used was obtained from a survey of 2,035 people between 13 and 24 years old in Florianópolis (SC) and Curitiba (PR) in 2016 and Porto Alegre (RS) in 2015-the three capitals of Southern Brazil.

One of them is that the region still faces challenges to improve and strengthen its democracy, such as corruption, distrust in traditional institutions of politics, and political polarization. Since democracy is not just made of formal aspects, this paper analyzes the relationships between political culture and democracy in Brazil and Colombia — countries that show low levels of citizen participation and apathy about politics. We conducted an empirical analysis using the 2015 Latinobarometer database to understand how citizens perceive and act in their democratic systems, comparing both countries. The countries present similarities in their political cultures despite their different historical backgrounds, specifically periods of violence in Colombia and times of the interruption of democracy in Brazil.
