The sources examined are described and the pipemakers listed in both name and address order. This provides an overview of the industry during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
It has long been argued that any clay tobacco pipes found in New Zealand were either the result o... more It has long been argued that any clay tobacco pipes found in New Zealand were either the result of imports from Europe, or quite small scale production of pipes in Australia. Recent research, prompted by a chance find in the New Zealand newspaper archives, however, now seems to suggest that pipes were being manufactured in New Zealand from the early 1880s through to at least 1908, using locally sourced materials.

The report includes an analysis of the bowl forms and marks together with 68 illustrations, which provide an important reference group for pipes of this date from Yorkshire.
