Housing the government and the ruling subjects, court residence in the early modern era is an ambiguous space embodying the most public and most private spheres at once. Within the physical structure, this ambiguity presents itself as a challenge in architectural design which was compensated with the formulation of strict court etiquette. However, looking into historical instances, it is often possible to encounter spectacularly designed and built, but unutilized spaces due to the extensive mobility of the household. In contrast to the networks of residences of the Western rulers of the same period, the Topkapı Palace demonstrates a strong case as the center of imperial politics.
Nevertheless, the Ottoman court was almost as mobile as its European others, residing and executing political activities at temporary settlements. Revisiting the Turkish Letters of the well-known Austrian ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq, and his receptions by the Turkish rulers in remote regions, it is argued that the conception of the home was expanded and interlaced with the idea of territory for the 16th century Ottoman ruling community. Mapping the travels and personal comments of Busbecq, it is aimed to visualize and understand this hypothesis in relation to the concept of hospitality and diplomatic practices.

However, the works upon the subject carry the risk of staying superficial without going into the true meanings of the concept. In response to this risk, this paper aims to go backward and find the main notions behind it. Designated as a most general point, it starts with 'time'; continues by relating it to architecture through main time-based concepts that have roots in the discourse of the discipline; and starts consideration of temporary architecture in the last part, only after providing a background of the strong relationship of time and architecture to be able to obtain a critical viewpoint. Going from the most general point to the most specific, the paper ends with the example of ma'abara, a postwar temporary dwelling emerged in Israel, to concretise and relocate the discussion.

In this paper, the potentials of this notion is studied and compared with the spaces in the city that can be considered in-between for certain characteristics and analysed if they have the similar potentials with the notion. To concretise the findings, a case is selected from old industrial service areas for its potential to create inbetween spaces in the city. The selected case is Sıhhıye District, the area between Celal Bayar and Talatpaşa Boulevards, in Ankara, Turkey. Currently under construction of the new Concert Halls and Chorus Buildings of Presidency of Republic Symphony Orchestra (CSO Project), the area continues to be closed to public use for more than 60 years, creating an inbetween space in the center of dense urban fabric.
