My contribution investigates the utopian nature of desire and its feminine images in selected masterpieces taken from medieval Romance literatures. Starting from an examination of the lexical and metaphorical fields related to "imago" and "imaginatio" in the Middle Ages, the essay analyzes the principal characteristics of the feminine protagonist of the "Boeci" - an hagiographic poem in Langue d’Oc that re-elaborates the "Consolatio philosophiae" of Boetius -, of the desired woman of the lyric text "Molt jauzens mi prenc en amar" by the troubadour William IX, duke of Aquitaine, of the principal female character of an anonymous anglo-norman lai called "Desiré", of Guinevere in the anonymous ancient French prose romance "La Mort le roi Artu", of the star-like woman present in the poetry of Guido Guinizzelli and Guido Cavalcanti, of Beatrice in the XXI canto of Paradise in Dante Alighieri’s "Divine Comedy", and, finally, of the wonderful feminine character present in Francesco Petrarca’s "Secretum". From such an analysis especially two leitmotivs associated with the desired woman (or with the main feminine character of a given text) emerge: brightness and supernatural powers.
PAROLE-CHIAVE: Passio – Remedia – Aegritudo amoris – Bernardo di Ventadorn – Guglielmo IX – Tristan et Yseut
ABSTRACT: The birth, development and phenomenology of the "passio" constitute a crucial theme in the literature of the Middle Ages. From the lyric poetry of the troubadours, to the characters of Celtic and Arthurian romances, there is a succession of clinical “cases” of "aegritudo amoris": a real disease, according to medieval medical treatises, which analyse its causes and symptoms, and propose experiments and attempts to cure it. This contribution will focus on a few particularly suggestive passages devoted to the "passio" and its (im)possible remedies in early Romance literature.
KEYWORDS: Passio – Remedia – Aegritudo amoris – Bernart de Ventadorn

Gaia Gubbini - Abstract · Lancelot and Guinevere, the ‘palimpsest’ couple – Inf. V, vv. 127-138 · This paper aims to answer the following question : why did Dante choose Lancelot and Guinevere as the ‘palimpsest’ couple of the famous episode of Paolo and Francesca in Inferno v ? Thanks to a precise analysis of the history of the famous fictional couple through the great masterpieces of medieval French literature – from the romance in verses Lancelot ou le Chevalier de la Charrette by Chrétien de Troyes, to the anonymous prose cycle, Lancelot-Graal – the contribution draws a more articulated portrait of the two characters and identifies some key elements that can explain and better illuminate Dante’s choice.
Keywords · Dante Alighieri, Inferno v, Paolo and Francesca, Lancelot and Guinevere.

With lectures by leading international scholars from different disciplines related to Medieval and Early Modern studies, the conference will address the following questions (among others): which images and imagery are related to women in Medieval and Early Modern European Literatures; in which ways is the female body imagined in, for instance, literary, medical, philosophical, and legal texts; is there an identifiably male perspective on the female body and soul?
The respective contributions will be published in a volume collecting the conference proceedings.

By inviting scholars to discuss Dante’s oeuvre in its historical, philosophical, and literary contexts, the Freie Universität wishes to mark the 750th anniversary of the birth of Dante Alighieri.
