It did not belong to the original 12 poleis of the Achaean League, but became a member not before the late Classical or early Hellenistic period. It is therefore not clear when Leontion obtained the status of a polis and its urban design. From an archaeological perspective not very much is known about the town, which has for some time been correctly identified as located close to Kato Vlasia/Kalavryta. At this site new field research in the form of a Greek and Austrian synergasia has taken place for two years with the goal of obtaining better insight into the archaeology and history of Leontion implementing modern survey and excavation methods. The first results seem to indicate that the urban centre of the polis was probably (re-[?])founded due to the strategic situation during ca. 280–270 B.C. by Antigonos II Gonatas. After that time, the small town of Leontion seems to have prospered for only a few more decades.

Particular focus was given to the development of Limyra, especially in the concerned era. In order to achieve the ambitious goals, several excavations, geoarchaeological and geophysical surveys, architectural and epigraphic studies, an intra-urban survey, and a project to study the numerous architectural blocks used as spolia in the Late Antique city walls were planned. However, just a small part of these research projects could be carried out.
