The helmet engages an imaginative process through its design and production, but also in respect to the viewer. In relation to a literary siren helmet, namely Hector's helmet in Konrad von Würzburgs 'Trojanerkrieg', the different means for re-thinking and re-contextualising established classical topoi can be traced.

Alexander Kling, Martina Wernli) presents new ideas for analyzing and understanding the depiction of literary, thus fictional objects in medieval german narratives. It is focuses on two different interpretative approaches and points out fruitful perspectives and combinations: The first approach is the newer theoretical and methodical discussions in the broad field of Material Culture Studies (especially Object Biographies, Affordance Theory, Thing Theory). Secondly, it takes in account an essential model of thing interpretation that is characteristic for the Middle Ages: the 'Dingallegorese', situated in the wider field of an allegorical understanding of the medieval material world. This practice of reading the things of the world via their properties as signs relating to transcendental truths has brought forth a german research field in the 1950s and has been somewhat forgotten in recent years. Seeing that both perspectives – Material Culture Studies and Dingallegorese – focus on the object itself and both also consider fictional objects, they have to be brought together and be weighed agains each other in order to reach a deeper understanding of how and why medieval poets composed their narratives with and around material objects.
