Sophia Schmitt is a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for the Near and Middle East, Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich, Germany, where she teaches as a substitute for Prof. Ronny Vollandt in the field of Jewish Studies and coordinates the MAJLIS ERC-project. In 2022, she was a Harry Starr Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Jewish Studies, Harvard University, researching strategies of resilience among Jews of medieval Ashkenaz facing natural disasters. From 2019-2020, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for the Study of Conversion and Interreligious Encounters at the Ben-Gurion University in Beersheva, examining the possibilities and limitations of law as means to restrict the use of violence against Jews in the German Empire in the 15th century. Her PhD thesis (LMU, 2020) focused on the blood libel accusation against the Jewish community in Regensburg (1476-1480), analysing Jewish - Christian interaction and especially defense strategies of the Regensburg Jewish community against the allegation. From 2017-2021, she was a researcher in the GIF funded research project “Responsa and Archival Records of Medieval Ashkenaz in Legal and Cultural Conversation” at the department of History at LMU and taught seminars in Medieval History.

While the regulation of these rights according to Jewish law differed markedly from the approach of local German law, rabbinic responsa as well as archival materials demonstrate that Jews often embraced the legal practices of the majority when negotiating neighborly relations with both Christians and co-religionists. This article offers a close reading of such sources from the medieval German Empire, highlighting the knowledge and agency of both scholars and ordinary Jews, as well as the extent of their engagement with local legal culture.

Yet in the vast majority of towns in the medieval German Empire, Jews did not live in segregated, walled-off areas. During the Middle Ages, even the so-called “Jewish quarters” of German municipalities were usually mixed neighborhoods in which Jews and Christians were literally next-door (or next-window) neighbors. This physical proximity carried significant implications for social and cultural relations between groups and individuals, as well as for the application and negotiation of legal standards and norms. In this volume, we examine the embeddedness of Jews and Christians in medieval urban spaces and the inter-religious encounters and relationships that resulted from close contact within these heterogeneous settings.
