The continuity over time exists between cases as far removed in context as early 19th Century Greece and contemporary Syria. Common characteristics of Ottoman and post-Ottoman states, following from the imperial experience, was productive of evident identity fragmentation derived from ethno-religious elements sustained by the millet system. These identifications became entrenched as the basis of socio-economic stratification, leading to localized violence during the penetration of Western ideologies in the twentieth century.
