Previously unknown online users posting videos have recently achieved a kind of stardom. Such “So... more Previously unknown online users posting videos have recently achieved a kind of stardom. Such “Social Media Celebrities” (SMC) are “influencers” impacting on content consumption as well as on purchase decisions. By producing new types of content based on their creativity and monetizing it via social media platforms in innovative ways, they also became digital media entrepreneurs. This explorative study draws from global audience data as well as from video content in international comparison and a representative survey on gratifications sought by its consumption and quality criteria is applied. The findings suggest that a perceived quality is based on the celebrities’ credibility and the sympathy that users feel for them, with gratifications sought much like for traditional media. Although the audience of these channels is already substantial in absolute terms and still growing enormously—making alternative influencers serious competitors to professional journalism—we still know little about their ways of attracting and monetizing audiences, the topics they emphasize, or the specific content they provide. The paper presents first results from a study on gamers in Germany devoted to the observation and... more The paper presents first results from a study on gamers in Germany devoted to the observation and comparison of several socio-demographic, motivational and psychological factors in a variety of computer games differing by genre, recommended age and number of players. It can be shown that for a given socio-demographic segment every game exhibits a distinct motivational footprint depending on the game’s characteristics. Furthermore, depending on the game under consideration, the median values for the perceived social integration of the players differ significantly from game to game. On the other hand, no evidence was found for game-specific differences of gamers’ personality strength or perceived social support.
