Yet when looking at the history of studies on terrorism and political violence, it is possible to trace back documentations from the nineteenth century. This paper looks at how Lombroso researched and studied political violence and terror in the nineteenth century. Although Lombroso is mainly known for his claims concerning the origins of criminal behaviour, he was among the first to use social science to understand anarchist political violence. In his work on anarchists, he proposed that the reasons behind anarchist violence would be found in social conditions, psychological states and religious grievances. He developed techniques to study these links, such as combining information from maps and statistical data over time to examine the likelihood of revolts occurring in particular regions of the country and to develop specific countermeasures. This study compared Lombroso’s work with perspectives of academics on studies of terrorism, as well as those of policy-makers and security professionals in the implementation of security policies and potentially counterterrorism measures. This paper also compares the perspective of a current extremist actor to underlying political violence factors identified in Lombroso’s work.

The effects of terrorism can be traced back to ancient Greece and evolved en par with societies through the centuries. The anarchist ‘propaganda by deed’ methodology was followed by other terrorist movements later on in history, as well as in the modus operandi of the terrorist organization in the last decade. So the question remains, so now what’s next? The Internet and its ‘natural habitat’ gave the possibility to develop what has been recognized as cyber-terrorism. The services provided by the Internet allow terrorists to adopt an entrepreneur approach to their business. New products are quickly sought and customised to achieve defined goals like any other enterprise. The Internet allows terrorists to spread their message to a far wider audience than that permitted by other non-Internet environments. Cyber-terrorism evolved from being the support infrastructure necessary to commit an attack to the attack itself. This lethal cocktail kindles the need to rethink the economic, political and security strategies in order to mitigate the effects of cyber-terrorism.

The Cesare Lombroso Handbook brings together essays by leading Lombroso scholars and is divided into four main parts, each focusing on a major theme. Part one examines the range and scope of Lombroso’s thinking; the mimetic quality of Lombroso; his texts and their interpretation. The second part explores why his ideas, such as born criminology and atavistic criminals, had such broad appeal. Developing this, the third section considers the manners in which Lombroso’s ideas spread across borders; cultural, linguistic, political and disciplinary, by including essays on the science and literature of opera, ‘La donna delinquente’ and ‘Jewish criminality’. The final part investigates examples of where, and when, his influence extended and explores the reception of Lombroso in France, China, Spain and the Philippines. This text presents interdisciplinary work on Lombroso from academics engaged in social history, history of ideas, law and criminology, social studies of science, gender studies, cultural studies and Jewish studies. It will be of interest to scholars, students and the general reader alike. "

This need is a reaction to the control of human trafficking and the international threat of terrorism, amongst other crimes in Malta and Europe. Besides the constant updates in the Criminal Code, document fraud analysts are increasingly in demand to ensure a more thorough and scientific analysis of forgeries of documents, stamps, seals and private writings.
