Nefertari was Pharaoh Ramesses II’s favourite wife, and his immense love for this beautiful Queen, the great royal wife, is evident in the aestethic and sensual artistic expression of her journey towards afterlife in the House of Eternity. The tomb was rediscovered by Ernesto Schiaparelli 1904. His photographic documentation is a cornerstone in the on-going effort to preserve Nefertari’s tomb for the world, McDonald (1996).
This paper will explore the symbolic and perhaps archaic representation of art and hieroglyphs related to the afterlife, amduat, in Queen Nefertari’s tomb. The tomb paintings are based on chapter 17, 94, 144, 146 and 148 of the book of dead, and these elaborate paintings will be used to explore the Queens journey towards afterlife.
