About #1Lib1Ref
The annual #1Lib1Ref campaign — abbreviated for one librarian, one reference — calls on librarians around the world, and anyone who has a passion for free knowledge, to add missing references to articles on Wikipedia.
The 2021 #Lib1Ref campaign is the sixth iteration of the initiative, which runs twice per year: First, from 15 January through 5 February, and later in the year from 15 May to 5 June.
This year’s campaign has extra significance because it is timed with Wikipedia’s 20th birthday, celebrating two decades of free knowledge and the people who make it possible. Librarians, knowledge advocates, and #1Lib1Ref participants have always played an important role in advancing and strengthening Wikipedia. This year is about celebrating their work and the contributions of all Wikimedia volunteers.
In 2020, nearly half of the total participants for the campaign were new editors. Participants made 18,261 edits in more than 60 languages in January and in 33,257 edits in May. Dozens of in-person and online events accompanied the campaign. We hope to surpass these stats this year.
#1Lib1Ref main messages:
- The annual #1Lib1Ref campaign — which launches every year on Wikipedia’s birthday — invites librarians across the world to add missing references to articles, helping make the encyclopedia more reliable and useful. This mission is particularly important as people are seeking trustworthy information during COVID-19.
- As we celebrate Wikipedia’s 20th birthday in 2021, one of the greatest gifts to offer is your time helping to improve it. Give the gift of a citation to celebrate Wikipedia’s birthday.
- Amid COVID-19, people are increasingly turning to Wikipedia for reliable, unbiased, and up-to-date information. #1Lib1Ref is an opportunity to help improve the quality of content on this vital resource, at a time when quality information has never mattered more.
- Misinformation around COVID-19 has given rise to an alarming “infodemic.” Now more than ever, people need free access to reliable information. In this challenging time, Wikipedia offers a free, collaboratively-created and vetted source that is owned by no one and available to anyone. But we need the continued support of passionate volunteers to ensure quality and accurate information. The #1Lib1Ref campaign activates a group of some of the world’s most important stewards of knowledge: librarians.
- Wikipedia is only as strong as its sources. And its sources are only as strong as the knowledge stewards that make them accessible to the world. We’re calling on librarians around the world to help make Wikipedia stronger than ever, in a world that needs reliable information from sources like Wikipedia more than ever. We want to imagine a world in which every librarian has added one more reference to Wikipedia.
- #1Lib1Ref celebrates the overlapping mission of librarians and Wikimedia to foster a more informed public. And you don’t need to be a librarian to join in that celebration! Anyone who has a passion for free knowledge and a commitment to facts can join #1Lib1Ref.
- It’s easy and fun to participate in #1Lib1Ref. Anyone, anywhere is welcome to get involved. Learn how at 1lib1ref.org.
