From a specific point of view, Johannes Itten is the Johannes Kepler of the narratives in histories of art, architecture and design. Some renowned historians of science, in defense of the thesis that modern science had its foundations in “metaphysics,” have tended to capitalize on Kepler’s fascination with Neo-Platonic and Pythagorean mysticism, foregrounding this aspect of his writings to obliterate his role in the birth of mathematical astronomy. Likewise, Josef Rykwert, in his “The Dark Side of the Bauhaus” (1968), based his narrative on the thesis of the “mystical” foundations of the Bauhaus. He portrayed Itten as a central figure—a “Swiss painter”—who represents the “darkest” in the early Bauhaus. By contrast, in the narratives of historians who approach the Bauhaus experiment from a perspective that does not exclude from view the history of modern education, Itten appears not merely as a painter, but also as an educator. In these narratives the underlying principles of the preparatory program (Vorkurs), developed by Itten for the Bauhaus, become apparent. These are also the underlying principles of the progressive reform pedagogy movement, which, through Vorkurs, provided a firm basis for the early modern architectural education.
Itten’s mysticism is no more important for modern arts education or modern architectural education than Kepler’s mysticism is for modern mathematical astronomy, and much less than it has been fancied by the historians, theoreticians and critics discontented with the ideals of the enlightenment, modernity and progress. Conversely, for correctly assessing the educational legacy of the Bauhaus and for carrying it forward, it seems crucial to appreciate the significance of this experiment in the history of modern education, and of the principles underlying its aims.

ÖZET:
Johannes Itten bir bakıma sanat, mimarlık ve tasarım tarihi anlatılarının Johannes Kepler’idir. Modern bilimin “metafizik” temellere dayandığı tezini savunan bazı tanınmış bilim tarihçileri Kepler’in neo-Platoncu ve Pythagorasçı mistisizme duyduğu ilgiyi, modern matematiksel ast- ronominin doğuşundaki rolünün önüne çıkarmışlardır.

As Ernst Cassirer remarked many times, Galileo Galilei not only laid the basic principles of mode... more As Ernst Cassirer remarked many times, Galileo Galilei not only laid the basic principles of modern science, but also instituted its ethics by expounding “a new ideal of truth,” first formulated in his 1613 letter to Benedetto Castelli and pursued throughout his work: search for truth must be free from all authority. The same letter was deployed as evidence against Galileo in his condemnation by the Inquisition in 1633.
From the 1980s on, the postmodern offensive against Vatican’s initiative to reconsider the case of Galileo has been leveled precisely at his very “ideal of truth,” drawing on the allegation that science cannot lay any claim to “truth.” In “Galileo and the Tyranny of Truth,” a classic of this campaign, Paul Feyerabend claimed that Galileo had put himself in trouble by trying to impose his own truth on others, instead of heeding Cardinal-Inquisitor Robert Bellarmine’s admonition to speak only “hypothetically” and consider Copernicus’s world system merely as a mathematical instrument for better calculations, having nothing to do with “truth” or what holds “in reality.”
The anti-Galilean postmodern campaign sought its theoretical justification not only in that Bellarminian approach to science, which Karl Popper dubbed in 1953 as “instrumentalism” and associated with positivism. In addition, Alexandre Koyré’s seemingly “anti-positivist” thesis that Galileo was not an experimental physicist but a Platonist, who relied only on “imaginary experiments,” provided ground for such justification. Yet, Koyré’s thesis was challenged by Cassirer as early as 1944, and definitively refuted by the 1970s through Stillman Drake’s Galileo studies and Thomas Settle’s experimental work revealing Galileo’s mastery in the art of experiment. Since “instrumentalism” amounts to a plain nullification of the human significance of science by making it, in Popper’s words, “nothing but glorified plumbing,” and to a renunciation of its anti-authoritarian ethics, it seems all the more important today to reassert Galileo’s ideal of truth as the main ethical principle of doing and teaching science.

Buna karşılık, Bauhaus’un eğitim alanındaki mirasının doğru değerlendirilip ileriye taşınabilmesinde kritik önemi olan, Vorkurs deneyi(mi)nin modern eğitimin tarihindeki yerini ve bu deney(im)in amaçlarının tanımlanmasında yol gösteren ilkeleri görebilmektir.
