Among different species there are comparable structural characteristics in tissues and organs, but they also have different particularities responsible for certain functions. The components of the cardiovascular system should correspond to the solicitations given by the pressure and blood flow in a particular segment. If the solicitations exceed a particular threshold, the functional adaptation requires supporting morphological changes. The development of the circulatory system in lambs is correlated with the development of the digestive system, the type of nutrition and the characteristics of this species as ruminants. To capture the adaptive changes we resorted to anatomical investigations. The aim of this research was to identify and describe the particularities of the celiac artery in lambs. The study included 15 hybrid Merino lambs, 4-6 months old, sacrificed by the breeder. After removing the skin, the abdominal aorta was identified through stratigraphic dissection. Further on...

Conserving anatomical pieces is of the upmost importance for both anatomy laboratories -because these are an essential learning tools - and natural history museums. In order to be used in theteaching process in optimal conditions, they must comply with several criteria: they must preserve as wellas possible living tissues characteristics, they must allow easy and low cost processing and maintenancetechniques, and be non-hazardous to the health of the individuals handling them. The present studyapproaches the formaldehyde and mummification conservation techniques, aiming to asses which of thembetter serve the desiderata previously mentioned. Researches were carried out in the ComparativeAnatomy Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca. Four formaldehyde preservedanatomical pieces and five mummified anatomical pieces were examined for this study. According to ourobtained results, we have determined that the mummification conservation technique yields more timeen...

Nowadays, embryos recovery and transfer, immediately after recovery are allowed in most horse breed. During February-May 2008 researches were made on 4 mares with age between 4 and 22, belonging to different breed, from which 2 were proposed for the embryos recovery. From the total of six uterine flushings made at the 2 mares, four (66%) had no result, no emryos being identified in the recovery medium. All four flushings were performed at mare 1. In the case of the two flushings made at mare 2, there were identified two embryos, with maximum efficiency. Embryos recovering rate was 33%.

Analgesia is of great importance in surgical trauma occurring in horses. In the present, long term epidural analgesia has become a routine method for trauma of the hind limb, but, in the case of the thoracic limb there is no regular similar technique. Continuous nerve block is a method using a local continuous perfusion with anesthetics administered through a catheter placed along the direction of peripheral nerves and it represents a new analgesia technique. This method is frequently used in human medicine to reduce post-surgical pain in body extremities. Continuous nerve block doesn't affect the general state of health of equines, and through the induction of analgesia it encourages healing conditions. The present study aims to develop a treatment method usable on tranquilized standing horses, by placing a catheter along the palmar nerves of the thoracic limb. We have studied the main anatomical points for placing the catheter along the peripheral nerves of the thoracic limb a...

In blood vessels situated just after the heart, an irregular blood flow occurs due to some specific structural elements of the tunica media. The current paper describes the histological aspects of some post-cardiac arterial sections in lamb. The tissue samples were collected from five 30 days old male lambs (Țurcană breed). Histological specimens from different regions of the aorta were harvested (i.e., the ascending aorta, aortic arch, thoracic and abdominal regions of the descending aorta). From the specified regions, small pieces (cca. 0.5 cm) were fixed in neutral 10% buffered formalin. The tissues were subsequently embedded in paraffin wax, sectioned at 5 μm, and stained with Goldner’s trichrome and Verhoeff methods. Tissue analysis was performed using an Olympus system for image acquisition and analysis. Histological appearance of the assessed segments of the aorta in lamb is unusual. Major changes occur in tunica media of the aorta. In the ascending aorta, aortic arch an...

Exposure to phytotoxins that are present in imported ornamental or native plants is an important cause of animal disease. Factors such as animal behaviors (especially indoor pets), climate change, and an increase in the global market for household and ornamental plants led to the appearance of new, previously unreported plant poisonings in Europe. This has resulted in an increase in the incidence of rarely reported intoxications. This review presents some of the emerging and well-established plant species that are responsible for poisoning episodes in companion animals and livestock in Europe. The main plant species are described, and the mechanism of action of the primary active agents and their clinical effects are presented. Data reflecting the real incidence of emerging poisoning cases from plant toxins are scarce to nonexistent in most European countries due to a lack of a centralized reporting/poison control system. The diversity of plant species and phytotoxins, as well as th...

Stomach fragments from 3 guinea pigs were collected from the three regions: cardiac, fundic and pyloric, for histochemical investigations. The anatomical segments were processed by the classical method of inclusion in paraffin and the histological sections were stained with PAS reaction for highlighting the neutral mucins and the Alcian blue method for acid mucins. All the surface cells of the gastric mucosa and in the crypts were positive on the PAS reaction and negative in the case of the alcian blue reaction. This demonstrates that cells on the surface and in the crypts synthetize neutral mucins. In the case of the cardiac region glands, only a small number of cells were positive on the two histochemical reactions, which shows that the cardiac glands in guinea pig synthesize a very small amount of neutral and acidic mucins. There are no positive cells in neither reaction used in the fundic glands case, which shows that these glands do not synthesize mucins, neither neutral nor ac...

BackgroundCarbofuran was a widely used board-spectrum pesticide, which despite his strict regulation and bans for more than one decade is still encountered in cases of intentional poisoning in dogs and wildlife. The objective of the study was to provide a complete and detailed description of the pathological, histological and toxicological findings of the 7 cases of intentional carbofuran poisoning in dogs. ResultsIn this retrospective study 7 case of carbofuran intoxication recorded from July 2015 to June 2017 were analyzed. Following complete history recording, all cases were examined by complete necropsy and histopathology. The carbofuran intoxication was confirmed in all cases by gas-chromatography. The postmortem examination revealed extensive haemorrhages and congestion located mainly within the respiratory, nervous and cardiovascular systems, accompanied by degeneration and necrosis within the lung, heart and kidneys.ConclusionsNowadays in the European Union, carbamate poison...

In this study, the caecum of five guinea pigs was anatomically, histologically, and histochemically analyzed. From an anatomical point of view, it has been proved that the caecum in guinea pigs occupies the caudal segment of the abdominal cavity and consists of three parts: the ampullary portion, the body of the caecum, and the apex of the caecum, without a caecal appendix. In our histological analysis, we observed that the caecum has a simple structure, and the cecal mucosal glands are rare and contain, in addition to enterocytes, a small number of goblet cells, which are better represented in the deep part of the glands. Histochemically it has been observed that goblet cells are PAS and Alcian blue positive, which shows that they secrete both neutral and acidic mucins. The intensity of these two histochemical reactions is similar to that of goblet cells from other intestinal segments, proving that they are typical goblet cells. The large volume of the caecum suggests that this is ...
